CHIAPAS.- Archaeologists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have documented 179 pre-Hispanic objects inside a difficult-to-reach cave in the La Venta River canyon, in what the institute describes as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries made in the region in recent decades. The site, known as Mundo Zoque Cave, lies near the Arco del Tiempo, a monumental natural rock formation in the municipality of Cintalapa, Chiapas. Extending for more than 100 meters, the cave contained 13 ritual deposits filled with ceramic urns, bowls and incense burners, many decorated with human figures and representations of jaguars, owls and snakes. Preliminary analysis dates the material to the regional Late Classic period, around AD 600–900. The cave was first located by local guide Jairo Díaz Barreiro, who reported it to the INAH Chiapas Center in January 2026.
