Peter Hujar and Liz Deschenes open a landmark dialogue in Berlin   Rare 1910 "Shoeless" Joe Jackson Minor League card heads to Auction   Monika Michalko's immersive New York debut opens at MARC STRAUS

Peter Hujar, David Wojnarowicz (Hand Touching Eye), 1981 © The Peter Hujar Archive / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2026.

BERLIN.- Bringing together works by Peter Hujar and Liz Deschenes, Persistence of Vision opens an intergenerational dialogue on photography. Marking the first major exhibition of both Hujar’s and Deschenes’ work in Berlin, the show proposes an expansive understanding of the medium while foregrounding the uncompromising clarity of vision that defines their practices. “I make uncomplicated, direct photographs of complicated and difficult subjects. I photograph those who push themselves to any extreme and people who cling to the freedom to be themselves.” — Peter Hujar Working in New York City from the 1960s to the 1980s, Peter Hujar (1934–1987) captured the transformative cultural era between the Stonewall uprising and the onset of the AIDS crisis in piercing black-and-white photographs. Deeply rooted in and inspired by the artistic life of the East Village, he portrayed ... More

1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes Series 8 Joe Jackson SGC VG 3 - MBA Silver!

DALLAS, TX.- Before he became one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, even “Shoeless Joe” Jackson spent some time in the minor leagues. Before he became a legend with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox, Jackson toiled in the minors, playing stints with the Greenville (S.C.) Spinners, the Savannah (Ga.) Indians and the New Orleans Pelicans. Now baseball collectors will be able to bid on a historic relic from the earliest stage of Jackson’s legendary career when a 1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes Series 8 Joe Jackson SGC VG 3 crosses the auction block in Heritage’s April 3-4 Spring Sports Card Catalog Auction. “Given his status among the greatest hitters of all time, as well as his involvement in the controversial 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal it is understandable that Shoeless Joe Jackson is incredibly popular among collectors to this day,” says Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions. “Material from different points during his Major ... This latest body of work emerged from recent travels in Mexico — where she visited Oaxaca, Mazunte, Puerto Escondido, and Mexico City — and registers a marked expansion of the artist’s palette and iconographic vocabulary.

NEW YORK, NY.- MARC STRAUS announces Notes from Lagunilla, the New York debut of Monika Michalko, opening at 299 Grand Street. The exhibition will remain on view through April 26. Over the past fifteen years, Michalko has developed a highly codified pictorial language distinguished by chromatic intensity and destabilized geometric form. Her compositions, situated between landscape and still life, construct immersive, self-contained environments in which vegetal forms sway, tendrils unfurl, and gradient skies dissolve into misty prismatic atmospheres. These paintings propose worlds that are at once fully articulated and subtly estranged: perspectival logic is skewed, scale shifts unpredictably, and the decorative verges on the hallucinatory. This latest body of work emerged ... More

“...One movie about the East Village that gets it right… A swan song to a languishing New York tribe.” – Manohla Dargis, Village Voice

NEW YORK, NY.- Philip Hartman’s NO PICNIC (1986), a priceless artifact of New York’s pre-gentrification East Village, starring David Brisbin, Myoshin, Anne D'Agnillo and Luis Guzmán, with appearances by Steve Buscemi, Richard Hell, and other fixtures of the Downtown music and art scenes (Rafik, Bleecker Bob), will run in a new 4K restoration at Film Forum from Friday, April 17 through Thursday, April 23. Hartman’s neo-noir comedy follows down-and-out jukebox operator Macabee Cohn, played with deadpan melancholy by Brisbin, who wanders the cheap tenements, dive bars, and derelict streets of the East Village in search of a mysterious woman in a striped dress. NO PICNIC premiered at the 1986 Sundance Film Festival, where Peter Hutton won the Best Cinematography prize for his gorgeously evocative black-and-white imagery, working with Emmy Award–winning director Mike Spiller as assistant cameraman, animator ... Roger Brown, Lake Effect, 1980. © The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brown Family.

CHICAGO, IL.- Roger Brown: Weathervane is the gallery’s first monographic exhibition dedicated to Brown since announcing exclusive representation of the artist’s estate. Weathervane explores the artist’s vision of an emotionally charged contemporary life set at the tense border between the built environment and the natural world. Featuring eleven paintings from the 1980s and 1990s, the exhibition reflects Brown’s clarity of vision as an artist both unafraid to face sociopolitical headwinds and unable to ignore ecological destruction. Playing with shifts of scale, Brown communicates reverence and awe for the power of nature while his perspective on human plight sees a fraught and tenuous future. For example, in the 1980 painting Lake Effect, Brown paints the grand high-rises of Chicago, one of the world’s most famous skylines at the time, as a minuscule strip of skyline against alarming concentric arcs of red storm clouds. In rhythmic aerial compositions such as Weather Map a ... More

Tristan Unrau makes ambitious Los Angeles debut at David Kordansky   Tegene Kunbi to represent Ethiopia at the 2026 Venice Biennale   Shirani Bolle: Sirius Arts Centre presents the artist's first comprehensive solo survey

Tristan Unrau, Surrender, 2025. Oil on linen, 83 x 69 x 1 1/4 inches (210.8 x 175.3 x 3.2 cm) framed: 85 1/2 x 71 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches (217.2 x 181.6 x 5.7 cm).

LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Kordansky Gallery presents Hopes and Fears, an exhibition of new paintings by Tristan Unrau, on view from March 19 through April 25, 2026. Occupying three spaces at the Los Angeles location, this is Unrau’s first show with the gallery and the artist’s most ambitious presentation to date. Drawing widely and freely from the modes, subjects, and moods that have preoccupied painters for centuries, Unrau assimilates a formidable range of references across canvases both self-contained and in dialogue with one another. The plurality of styles that make up Hopes and Fears functions like a selective, idiosyncratic revision of the history of visual culture, as if the entire Western canon were the work of a single, virtuosic author—or as if there were no locatable authors at all. Unrau’s polystylism has a dual purpose. On one level, a variety of aesthetic approaches is a way to produce a variety of experiences ... More

VENICE.- Ethiopia Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia presents Shapes of Silence, an exhibition by Tegene Kunbi (b. 1980, Addis Ababa), curated by Abebaw Ayalew, open to the public from May 9 to November 22, 2026, in the prestigious setting of Palazzo Bollani. Representing the culmination of Tegene Kunbi’s thirty years of studio practice, Shapes of Silence explores silence as a social and political condition through a new series of works that mobilizes abstraction, textiles, and assemblage. Working with painting as a layered material archive, the artist approaches silence not as absence, but as a charged space shaped by cultural expectation and material history. Silence as a social practice in Ethiopia often draws its justification from the country’s rich folkloric traditions. Within these traditions, silence holds an ambivalent and paradoxical status, praised as a virtue while simultaneously regarded as a potential misdeed. The proverb 0 ... More

CORK.- Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, County Cork, Ireland, presents an exhibition by artist Shirani Bolle, this has nothing to do with me, marking her first solo show and most comprehensive presentation to date. Bolle is based in Limerick City, Ireland, and has Sri Lankan, Dutch-German, and British heritage. Her practice is shaped by both lived and inherited experiences of displacement and survival. As she puts it, “Once I found a gun concealed in a book in my granny’s knitting cupboard and that pretty much sums up this exhibition.” Bolle is self-taught, having developed a practice beyond the dominant, canonical art historical framework. Her practice spans performance, text, sculpture, and sound, with textiles functioning as a central medium that integrates these disciplines. She employs storytelling as a primary method and draws on a broad range of references, from Central and South Asian material culture, ... More

Jeffrey Heiman's luminous New York debut opens at Freight + Volume   Gwangju Biennale presents theme for 16th edition You Must Change Your Life   Lisette Model's uncompromising vision arrives in new focused survey at Kunstfoyer

Jeffrey Heiman, Flip, 2026, oil on canvas, 48 x 30 inches, courtesy the artist and Freight+Volume Gallery.

NEW YORK, NY.- Freight + Volume presents Residual Heat, an exhibition of recent paintings by Jeffrey Heiman. Residual Heat will be on view at 39 Lispenard Street from March 14 through April 18, 2026. This marks Heiman’s first exhibition with the gallery. Jeffrey Heiman’s paintings swim in the waters of art history only to re-emerge with an abundance of homoerotic references long visible in plain sight. The figures and objects that fill his frames enact an implicit queering of history. The nude body appears as a site of liberation—not in the sense of spectacular protest, but through the different forms of intimacy it invites. Across these pictures, a searing light renders Heiman’s themes visible, a kind of glorious remembering of physiques just shy of dissolution. The symbolic force of light—elemental, revealing, creative—imbues his works with a formal thrust, capturing a heightened emotionalism which is equally studious. In Heiman’s ... More

GWANGJU.- The 16th Gwangju Biennale announces its theme, You must change your life. Inspired by the final line of Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem Archaic Torso of Apollo, the Biennale explores the transformative power of art in responding to the multiple crises and urgencies of our time. Led by Artistic Director Ho Tzu Nyen, together with curators Che Kyongfa, Park Gahee, and Brian Kuan Wood, the Biennale will take place from September 5 to November 15, 2026, at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall. In Rilke’s 1908 poem, an imagined, fragmentary ancient sculpture releases within its viewer an overwhelming surge of emotional energy which compels new commitments and life-changing resolutions. The intensity of this encounter culminates in the line: “You must change your life.” Rather than specify how one must change, the poem ... More

The exhibition presents a focused selection of key bodies of work and iconic photographs that reveal Model’s uncompromising vision and her lasting impact on photography. Lisette Model (1901–1983) brought about a sudden change in photography with her spectacularly direct pictures. Her immediate, humorous, frequently confrontational, yet sometimes also empathetic style of representation revolutionized traditional documentary photography. Her pictures of street-life scenes and portraits combine social realism and emotional expression: “Shoot from the gut!” was her famous credo. This exhibition brings together Model’s most ... More

As pioneers of digital image-making, Inez & Vinoodh occupy a singular position at the intersection of fashion and art, continuously pushing the boundaries of photography as a medium. What characterises their work is the mingling of the familiar and the unsettling, the quotidian and the uncanny. “Inez & Vinoodh have been able to create something utterly fantastic; an invisible reality that looks artificial but is not. A reality that speaks of our ungraspable inner world and its relationship with our perceptions and imagination. A world in which love ... More

Helmut Newton and Steven Klein unite in provocative new show at Staley-Wise Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- In this exhibition, the photographic works of Helmut Newton and Steven Klein are united because they both share an inclination for the erotic, the fetishistic, the humorous, and the glamorous – elements which have universal appeal. Helmut Newton has long been known as an icon of fashion photography and scandalized magazine readers in the 1970s and 1980s with his charged and witty depictions of sex and power. From the 1990s to the present, Steven Klein has taken up Newton’s baton with his equally provocative images while reflecting contemporary attitudes about beauty, gender, and sexuality. While both artists possess such distinctive styles that their very names can be used as descriptors, this exhibition unites two visionaries who are both unafraid of “the dark side,” resulting in bodies of work that command attention and expand the definitions of fashion ...
