Portrait of Bishop Antonius Triest by Gaspar de Crayer.
GHENT.- After more than a year of legal, historical, and archival scrutiny, the City of Ghent has decided not to return Portrait of Bishop Antonius Triest by Gaspar de Crayer to the heirs of Antwerp art dealer Samuel Hartveld. The decision, taken on 20 November 2025, follows the unanimous recommendation of an independent commission appointed by the city to assess the claim. The painting, dated after 1630, is owned by the City of Ghent and has been part of the collection of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent (MSK) since 1948. Its wartime history, however, is far from straightforward. The restitution request was formally submitted to the MSK on 3 October 2023 on behalf of a trust representing the heirs and great-grandchildren of Samuel Hartveld, a Jewish art dealer who fled Antwerp for New York in 1940. Hartveld and his family were victims of Nazi persecution, and much of his art collection was seized after his departure. Previous research, including work by journalist and author Geert Sels, ha ... BERLIN.- The large-scale environment at Halle am Berghain encompasses film, sound, vibration and light. Described by the artist as a modern myth, the film at its core follows the emergence of a faceless, human-like figure, which moves through shifting states. As the artist describes, it is set in a realm outside time and space, where there is no beginning or end, no inside or outside, only an incessant dance of matter, in which every moment is a maybe. We witness the figures attempts to exist, communicate and escape a single state of reality or consciousness. We see a dissolution of boundaries between inner and outer realms, and between living and non-living matter. For Huyghe, uncertainty is explored through this allegory to reveal a liminal space where states are superimposed. It is analogous to how a quantum system can exist in multiple states before it is measured, when infinite possibilities collapse into a single version ... More
Mark Dion, The Collector in Repose, 2026. Squirrel, found objects, wooden shipping crate, 28 1/4 x 33 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches; 71.8 x 85.1 x 69.9 cm.
NEW YORK, NY.- Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of new work by Mark Dion. Since the 1980s, Dions work has addressed the world we live in by adopting, and then subverting, its vernacular forms and institutional systems. The artist uses found objects to create sculptures and installations, and his drawings contain straightforward figural representation and standard graphic didactical formats. The familiar language of his materials and styles disarms and draws in viewers. Many of his projects have involved the artist embedding himself with experts in their respective fields to learn thoroughly their methods and traditions, in order to create new works that depict that field using its own language, conventions, and systems. The works maintain a delicate balance between deadly seriousness and wicked humor. ... More
Bertrand Lavier, Photo: Thomas Merle. Courtesy of the Artist and Xavier Hufkens, Brussels.
BRUSSELS.- In Morceaux Choisis, Bertrand Laviers latest exhibition with the gallery, the artist unveils two new bodies of work, alongside extensions of his ongoing chantiers or worksites. The exhibition title French for selected pieces, or anthology sets the tone, invoking notions of choice, arrangement, and display that lie at the centre of Laviers practice. It also speaks to the breadth and variety that define his work, making it an especially apt name for these new bodies of work. The exhibition opens with a metaphorical bang: the wreckage of a Fiat 500, one of the icons of the last centurys golden era of the automobile, its crushed body painted in a glossy, enticing red. Standing in isolation at the end of the gallery, on a platform that functions more like a stage than a plinth, Fiat 500 is the latest of Laviers damaged car works, the origins of which can be traced back to his seminal Giulietta ... Elisheva Biernoff, Fragment, 2024.
NEW YORK, NY.- David Zwirner is presenting an exhibition of paintings by San Franciscobased artist Elisheva Biernoff at the gallerys 34 East 69th Street location in New York, marking her first solo show on the East Coast. This exhibition spans Biernoffs career, featuring a representative selection of her intimately scaled paintings. Working with meticulous fidelity and care, the artist uses fine, luminous brushstrokes to create intricately painted depictions of anonymous photographs, which she sources from antique stores and online marketplaces. Biernoff paints on paper-thin plywood, replicating each detail and blemish, front and back, from the original object in a methodical process that is deeply deliberate and reflective; she only produces around four works each year. Individually mounted on handmade poplar stands, the resultant images exist at the nexus of painting, sculpture, and photography. Biernoffs works are activated by the viewers close looking and emotional c ... More

Romain Bernini, Autopsy, 2025, oil on canvas, 150 x 120 cm.
PARIS.- Henri Cartier-Bresson et Martine Franck created the Fondation in 2023 with the intention to dedicate its spaces not only to photographers of all styles and generations, but also to painters, sculptors, and draftsmen. After the exhibition of Alberto Giacomettis sculptures in 2005, followed three years later by Saul Steinbergs drawings, the Fondation now renews its commitment to presenting other types of practices by showing the paintings of Romain Bernini. For around twenty years, this French artist, born in 1979, has been developing an impressive body of work situated at the crossroads of figuration and a form of urban esotericism. He captures moments that function as hypotheses. His compositions depict latent situations in which figures in search of meaning embody kinds of living enigmas. The series of paintings presented here for the first time is inspired by a curious little eighteenth-century book, Giphantie, by Charles Tiphaigne. Guided by a prefect,& ... More

Oxygenic, Mortons largest exhibition to date with Sadie Coles HQ, marks both a summation of her achievements, and a range of new departures and ambitions.
LONDON.- Sequenced in the Kingly Street gallery like tracks on an album, Victoria Mortons new paintings are individually and collectively scored and orchestrated. The paintings in Oxygenic have diverse starting points, and their characteristics range from performative, flamboyant and detailed to quiet and spare. Painted in quick, instinctive sessions or slowly deliberated over across several months, this series reflects the ongoing enquiries within Mortons deeply researched practice, as well as her transition into a new studio environment one that has provided more air, more room to breathe. Together the paintings evoke non-linear narratives. This new body of work reflects the latest in her continuing investigation into the language of painting and the coexistence of artistic analysis and felt experience. Morton remains preoccupied with music and with the parallels between playing, recording ... More

AMSTERDAM.- Tracing the effects of financialisation and austerity, the collaborative project The Broken Pitcher attends to a concrete case: a crucial meeting at a bank, negotiating the foreclosure of a family home in Larnaca, Cyprus in 2019. Foreclosures are one of the austerity measures that were imposed on the Cypriot government by the Troika (European group) after the financial crisis in 2012. The Broken Pitcher looks at the banking system and the potentials for changing the script of interacting with it. The project consists of a one-to-one scale model of the bank room, which functions both as an exhibition space and as a set which features in a 70-minute film that reconstructs the bank meeting. Inspired by Abbas Kiarostamis film First Case Second Case (1979, Iran), the reenactment of the meeting is then shown to people from various backgrounds who are asked to respond to the question: In your opinion what should the bank employees do? The filmed ... More

With her signature cut-and-stitch method, lush biomorphic forms emerge, enveloping one another in a rhythmic interplay of gesture and movement. An archive of memory and time, Days paintings reference the sensorial experiences that arise when one tunes into the natural world from a state of seclusion or solitude. Deconstructing power: Anahita Razmi unpacks global symbols at Carbon 12 DUBAI.- CARBON 12 will present The Task of the Mythologist, Anahita Razmis sixth solo exhibition at the gallery, including an intervention by artist Peyman Shafieezadeh. In his canonical book Mythologies (1957), Roland Barthes analyzes how myths are constructed through signs and symbols. Focusing on Western popular culture, he considers how modern myths are produced through everyday words and objects. For her sixth solo exhibition at Carbon 12, Anahita Razmi builds on this philosophical premise to explore global power structures embedded in both our material and virtual worlds. For Razmi, symbols such as the fingers-crossed emoji, a Turkish talismanic shirt, or a 90s Britpop emblem hold unstable meanings, shifting with context and use. It is precisely the act of deconstructing these layered meanings that illuminates their significance, what Barthes ... More
Zin Taylor explores the language of ritual thresholds at Quartz Studio TURIN.- On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Quartz Studio will present Propylon Stela, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Canadian artist Zin Taylor (Calgary, Canada, 1978). The title of the exhibition evokes the image, common both in archaeology and in science fiction, of a threshold, a gateway providing access to another dimension. The installation for Quartz will utilize a selection of Zin Taylors sculptural output (ambient tokens) to create a specific narrative for this site. These ambient tokens are slab-like tablets that levitate on the wall. They vary in size and color, and are embossed with a familiar language of geometric and chromatic units. The creation of each tablet uses an index of illustrated elements painted and cut from card and polymer that are pressed into time-sensitive synthetic clay. The materials are synthetic because the ideas are synthetic. These are copies, ... More

Michelle Segre's monumental "Nebula" lands in New York NEW YORK, NY.- Derek Eller Gallery presents Nebula, a singular monumental sculpture by Michelle Segre in the North Room. Cosmological, skin-like, and bursting with color, Nebula is over ten feet tall and is comprised of some of Segres signature materials including yarn, wool, ceramic, acrylic polymer, and wire. Conceived of during the last several years as a positive and rather humorous antidote to this apocalyptic moment, Nebula posits an alternative to earthly boundaries. The word itself denotes a large cloud of gas and dust located in outer space. Nebulae can originate from either the detritus of hydrogen, helium, and other substances expelled by the explosion of a dying star (i.e., a supernova) or can exist as a region where new stars are born. It is both this dichotomy of purpose and the materiality of the nebula which interests Segre. It can be a place ... More
