WILMINGTON, DE.- James Gurneys Dinotopia bring the worlds of science and the imagination to life by chronicling Arthur and Will Denisons remarkable experiences on a lost island in vibrant color and meticulous detail. Recounted in words and pictures in the best-selling book series, Dinotopia: A Land Apart From Time (1992), Dinotopia: The World Beneath (1995), and Dinotopia: First Flight (1999), the artists compelling tale has engaged and enchanted readers by inviting them to explore the far reaches of a mysterious destination. Waterfall City, the islands center of learning, The Hatchery, birthplace of many of Dinotopias prehistoric inhabitants, and The Forbidden Mountains, where dinosaurs dare not venture, are just a few of the places described in Arthur Denisons fictional journal and in the outstanding works on view.
Inspired by archaeology, lost civilizations, and the art of illustration, Gurneys Dinotopia is an extraordinary place where humans and dinosaurs live in harmony in a society that has its own language and alphabet. Gurneys stories and art fuse fantasy with realism and scientific accuracy. This major exhibition features over 60 works, as well as reference material, from three of Gurneys books: Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time (1992); Dinotopia: The World Beneath (1995); and Gurneys fourth volume in the series, Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara (2007). Walt Reed, founder of Illustration House, commented: Gurney joins the company of America's noted illustrators such as Howard Pyle (who also wrote and illustrated many of his own stories), Maxfield Parrish, and N. C. Wyeth.
