HONG KONG.- Gagosian announces Lifting the Veil, an exhibition of works by James Turrell that opens on May 28. The exhibition surveys the artist’s practice of shaping light and perception with holograms, prints, and three Glasswork pieces, along with site plans, photographs, and models of Skyspaces and Turrell’s magnum opus, Roden Crater. Turrell’s Skyspaces are individual architectural chambers with an aperture in the ceiling open to the sky; framing its expanse and incorporating both natural and artificial light, they amplify the senses. Under construction since 1977, Roden Crater is an unprecedented large-scale artwork created within a volcanic cinder cone located in the Painted Desert region of Northern Arizona. For over five decades, Turrell has pushed the limits of perception through a practice centered on light as his primary material. Beginning in the 1960s with installations of projected and natural illumination in his studio in Santa Monica, California, his focus has been ... More

“Gus” to Star in Sotheby’s Natural History Auction, 14th July.

NEW YORK, NY.- This summer, Sotheby’s will offer “Gus,” one of the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimens ever discovered, and the best specimen in private hands. Estimated at $20–30 million, the highest estimate ever placed on a dinosaur, this extraordinary fossil, excavated over field seasons in 2021, 2022, and 2023 will be the star highlight of Sotheby’s live Natural History Auction on 14th July. T. rex lived during the Late Cretaceous, in the Maastrichtian age, a time marked by warm climates, high sea levels, and rich coastal floodplains that sup-ported an extraordinary diversity of life across what is now western North America. These environments, from river systems to open woodlands, created the ecological conditions in which large herbivores such as Triceratops and Edmontosaurus flourished, ... More

LONDON.- BFI Southbank is hosting a major two month season this summer celebrating the centenary of the birth of cinema’s most enduring film star, Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe: Self Made Star, curated by the BFI’s Lead Programmer Kim Sheehan, opens on 1 June, coinciding with Monroe’s 100th birthday, and runs until 31 July, including a BFI Distribution rerelease of The Misfits. John Huston’s elegiac anti-Western, Monroe’s poignant final film, will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 5 June. The cultural phenomenon of Marilyn Monroe has endured for generations, though she is often reduced to a sex symbol frozen in time, or a tragic figure with a focus on the scandals, marriages and troubles that punctuated her personal life. But Monroe’s achievements, legacy and contribution to cinema stretches so far beyond ... More

Christoph Willibald Gluck, Autograph manuscript of part of the celebrated air “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice” from Orphée et Eurydice.

LONDON.- Stanley J. Seeger (1930–2011) was one of the most extraordinary collectors of his generation. Together with his partner of thirty-two years, Christopher Cone, they created and furnished a series of remarkable homes in England and around the world. The intelligence, curiosity, and sheer pleasure of their shared passions gave rise to a deeply personal collection that was driven as much by the pursuit of important pieces as by objects chosen simply because they brought them joy. Over the course of this spring and summer, an eclectic group of treasured pieces from their legendary collection will be offered at Sotheby’s in London. A selection of jewels and precious objects, alongside a quirky array of hats and canes, will be presented as part of Sotheby’s online Noble & Private Collections sale, open for bidding from 28 May to 9 June. This will be followed by Shelf Life: Books, Manuscripts and Works on Paper from the Library of Stanley J. Seeger & Christopher Cone, a dedicate ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- 125 Newbury will present an exhibition of work by David Byrne and Saul Steinberg from May 28 through August 1. Placing drawings, watercolors, prints, and collages by Steinberg in conversation with drawings and never-before-seen banner works by Byrne, David Byrne/Saul Steinberg: Influence and Affinity speaks to the artists’ shared sense of wry humor in concert with their sharp observation and expansive creativity. Separated by generations, their work springs philosophically from the same insights and observations. Celebrated for his sculptures, photographs, and works on paper that transform the signs and symbols of modern life into something surreal, Steinberg approached his subjects with both fondness and irony. Steinberg was the major artist-philosopher of the ’40s and ’50s, recording society’s accomplishments and foibles in drawings that often became pages and covers of The New Yorker. To a broad audience he may have been known as a cartoonist, but in truth he was ... More

Eddie Martinez brings 'Purple Flopper' and new 'Blackout' paintings to Galerie Max Hetzler   Christie's presents Beyond Ordinary - Then. Now. Next. Works from the Zabludowicz Collection   S.M.A.K. marks 40 years of Chambres d'Amis, the exhibition that took art into private homes

Eddie Martinez, Blackout, 2024–2026, photo: JSP Art Photography.

PARIS.- Galerie Max Hetzler, Paris, is presenting Purple Flopper, a solo exhibition by Eddie Martinez. This is the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery and his first in the Paris space. Titled after a painting from 2025, Purple Flopper brings together a group of new paintings and sculptures created over the past year. Moving fluidly across abstract and figurative motifs, Martinez’s practice is grounded in drawing, encapsulating a longstanding dialogue between spontaneity and deliberation. Central to Martinez’s work is the dynamic tension between patience and immediacy. Drawing embodies the impatient side of his practice: it allows him to capture ideas quickly and directly, often serving as the initial spark for larger works. Painting, by contrast, demands a slower, layered approach, which the artist consciously embraces. Nowhere is this more evident than his ongoing body of ‘Whiteout’ works, initiated in 2015. For ... S.M.A.K. Archive.

GHENT.- In 2026, S.M.A.K. celebrates the 40th anniversary of Chambres d’Amis, the groundbreaking exhibition in which Jan Hoet took contemporary art beyond the museum walls. Fifty-one international artists showed their work in the living rooms, stair halls, or bedrooms of private homes across Ghent. From 30 May 2026 to 10 January 2027, S.M.A.K. reflects on the past and looks to the future by inviting three artists – Heike Pallanca, Haim Steinbach and Susanne Kriemann – who will each develop a contemporary reflection on Chambres d’Amis within the museum walls. Conceived in 1986, Chambres d’Amis marked a decisive turning point in exhibition-making. Rather than presenting art within the neutral space of the museum, Jan Hoet dispersed it throughout the city, embedding artworks within private homes and everyday environments. This gesture did not simply relocate art; it transformed it. The domestic setting introduced contingency, intimacy and unpredictability. ... More

Sarah Pichlkostner turns societal residues into sculpture at Annet Gelink Gallery   Sitting Bull's 1885 Buffalo Bill Wild West contract sells for $168,213 at auction   IMMA partners with UCD to launch major research project on the Paul O'Neill Archive

AMSTERDAM.- Annet Gelink Gallery is presenting Moss Finger Liquid Soil Dripping Seeds Prodding Eye, the second solo exhibition by Sarah Pichlkostner at the gallery. Pichlkostner creates sculptures and environments that investigate invisible processes: the transmission of energy, the passage of time, and our psychological responses to materials and objects. Through a deep study of the behaviour of materials, her work reflects on the social life of objects and the way they shape, and are shaped by, human experience. The exhibition examines the possibility of an empathic encounter between our dysfunctional Anthropocene time and ecological responsibility. At its heart is a tension the artist describes as "the spatial disconnection between the world one lives in and the world one lives off." The eye and the finger serve as its central figures: symbols of perception and touch, and a model for seeing, approaching and understanding that refuses ... More

BOSTON, MASS.- A signed 1885 contract between Sitting Bull and Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show sold for $168,213 at RR Auction’s The Western Americana auction of Jochen Zeitz. The one-page agreement, signed June 6, 1885, formalized Sitting Bull’s appearance in the ‘Buffalo Bill Wild West Show’ for a four-month season. Under the contract, show manager John M. Burke agreed to pay Sitting Bull $50 per week and granted him the exclusive right to sell his own photographs and autographs. The contract was signed at the Standing Rock Agency in present-day South Dakota and countersigned by Indian agent James McLaughlin and interpreter Joseph Primeau as witnesses. The contract dates to the period when Sitting Bull traveled with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show after returning from exile in Canada. Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader associated with the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in 1885 after returning from exile ... More

Anawana Haloba explores craft as resistance at Bergen Kunsthall
BERGEN.- Bergen Kunsthall is presenting Anawana Haloba as the Festival Exhibition artist 2026. The exhibition is curated and produced by Bergen Kunsthall and has run in parallel with the Bergen International Festival since the festival's inception in 1953. The title "From This Darkness I Shall Grow" is inspired by the universe of Aboriginal Australian poet and filmmaker Romaine Moreton, pointing to a transformative movement from oppression into a space of agency. The exhibition is anchored in the reading of female craft traditions and polyphonic rituals as active forms of resistance. In the ceremonial practices of Tonga culture, multiple voices form a dense, collective sound structure built through repetition and call-and-response, in which a leader sings a phrase that the group responds to. Through improvisation and shifts in rhythm and expression, the soundscape ... More

Anna Zorina Gallery presents Nigel Howlett's New York solo debut 'Pursuit of Truth'
NEW YORK, NY.- Anna Zorina Gallery presents the Nigel Howlett solo show, Pursuit of Truth. The exhibition features the artist’s latest paintings that explore the intersection of humanity and artifice. Howlett’s anonymous figures appear futuristic and synthetic, their metallic or polished surfaces evoking digitally rendered forms, yet their gestures and interactions remain deeply human and emotionally recognizable. Avoiding specific narratives or definitive meanings, the artist invites viewers to interpret each scene through personal experience and perception, presenting truth not as objective, fixed or universal, but as something shaped through reflection, emotional response and social conditioning. Central to Howlett’s work is the tension between mechanical appearance and human presence. While the figures seem controlled and industrially constructed, each painting ... More
