Grand Palais sheds light on a phenomenon which traverses the history of art and society

PARIS.- Bohemia is a die-hard modern myth, thriving in songs, films and poems, proclaimed dead a hundred times and forever rising from its ashes. The figure of the Bohemian first appeared in the mid-19th century, between Romanticism and Realism, at a time when the artist’s status was undergoing a profound transformation. A talented young artist no longer sought the protection of some prince or other; he was a solitary genius, impoverished and misunderstood, who anticipated social upheavals. Many of the great heralds of modernity—poets (Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine…), painters and musicians (Courbet, Van Gogh, Satie, Picasso…)—put a face on this phenomenon. For generations of budding artists, these rebellious unconventional figures, idle womanisers and drunkards scraping a meagre living, sparked the dream of redeeming glory at the risk of oblivion and death. ... Unknown drawing from Van Eyck studio found: One of the greatest discoveries in early drawing   Masterworks by Tiffany Studios from the Geyer Family Collection to be offered at Sotheby's   Exhibition explores Renaissance Augsburg's rich traditions and innovations in works on paper

Studio Jan van Eyck, Crucifixion of Christ, c. 1440. Gold and silver stylus, pen and brush and lead slate pencil, over a preliminary drawing in black stylus (charcoal?), 25.4 x 18.7 cm.

ROTTERDAM.- Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen announced one of the greatest discoveries in early drawing, announced in the Dutch television programme ‘De Wereld Draait Door’. A six centuries old drawing from the studio of Van Eyck has surfaced in the Netherlands and will be on show from 13 October in the exhibition ‘The Road to Van Eyck’. The drawing was bought forty years ago, at an auction of an estate in the north of the country. The buyer paid ten guilders for the drawing of the crucifixion of Christ, because he liked the frame. But it is not the frame but the drawing itself that now appears to be of considerable value. It is a work dating from the 15th century, and not a nineteenth-century copy as originally thought. According to experts, the drawing is from the studio of Jan Van Eyck (Maaseik?. c. 1390-1441) ... More

Of the 103 works presented, 86 are from the National Gallery's own collection, with additional loans from the Metropolitan ... More

Ai Wewei world premieres the installation "81 Wooden Balls" at Art Museums of Bergen   MoMA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones with a comprehensive film retrospective   Iconic Warhol images to lead Sotheby's Prints Sale in New York on 1 and 2 November

The total number of balls coincides with the number of days Ai Weiwei was imprisoned in 2011.

BERGEN.- Tonight, Ai Weiwei’s new installation 81 Wooden Balls world premiered at Art Museums of Bergen as part of the group exhibition Real Life Stories. The installation fills the entire Tower Room at Lysverket and consists of 81 large wooden balls which are placed in a 9 by 9 meter square. The total number of balls coincides with the number of days Ai Weiwei was imprisoned in 2011. The artist has stated that the 9 by 9 meter formation draws its significance partly from the fact that 9 is the highest one digit number in China and that it symbolizes eternity. The balls are made from Huali Wood, each weighs 35 kilograms, and their polyhedron shape is based on sketches by Leonardo da Vinci. Ai Weiwei got the idea of using this ancient shape from one of his son’s plastic toys. Together with his team, he has spent two years exploring the joining methods of traditional Chinese furniture, and the balls are put togethe ... More

ISLAMABAD (AP).- Lacking the necessary cash and manpower, Pakistan is struggling to stem the flow of millions of dollars in ancient Buddhist artifacts that looters dig up in the country's northwest and smuggle to collectors around the world. The black market trade in smuggled antiquities is a global problem that some experts estimate is worth billions of dollars per year. The main targets are poor countries like Pakistan that possess a rich cultural heritage but don't have the resources to protect it. The illicit excavations rob Pakistan of an important potential source of tourism revenue, as valuable icons are spirited out of the country, and destroy any chance for archaeologists to document the history of the sites. "We are facing a serious problem because Pakistan is a vast country, ... More

Die Brücke, Katalog Austellung Brücke (mit Pechstein, Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff etc.) Berlin, 1912. Estimate: 18,000 EUR / $ 23,400.

HAMBURG.- It could turn out an incredible yield when the rare exhibition catalog with ten original woodcuts by Brücke-artists will be called up in the Hamburg Auction of Rare Books on 19/20 November, 2012. Estimated with € 18.000, it was originally bought for a bargain of € 5. Browsing a flea market he discovered the thin brochure in a size of 20 x 25 cm. The blue firm paper wrapper carries a pink rectangle with the inscription “Brücke“. Told that it was for just € 5, the book and art lover from the Odenwald could not say “no“. Following his gut feeling, he showed the brochure, which turned out to be an exhibition catalog, to the auction house Ketterer Kunst. After some research it was clear: The man from south-western Germany had made a hell of a bargain, not only had the catalog last been offered on the German auction market some 30 years ago, on top, he had bought an extremely rare ... In between are works by classic surrealists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and Max Ernst. THE SUPERSURREALISM looks at the time before, during and after the surrealist period, in an attempt to explore how surrealism is expressed today. Does it still have its power to shock, surprise and outrage? Moderna Museet has a substantial collection of surrealist works from the crucial years around 1920-40, comprising paintings, sculptures and objects. It includes legendary artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim, Louise Bourgeois, Max Ernst, Man Ray and many others. This co ... More

SARAJEVO (AP).- It survived the breakup of the Austrian empire, two world wars, the longest city siege in modern history and a bloody war in the 1990s that killed 100,000 people. Yet after 124 years, Bosnia's National Museum closed its doors Thursday due to dwindling state funding and disputes among rival ethnic groups. Having not received their salaries for a year, employees gathered at the fountain in the museum's botanical garden and threw a coin into it, making a wish that the institution will reopen soon. Then they left the building in downtown Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital, and nailed wooden boards that read "closed" across its front door. Museum director Adnan Busuladzic says he has lost hope that politicians will solve the problem any time soon. "There are two opposing ideas on ... More

The bill was presented in 1905 to Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks — Theodore Roosevelt's No. 2 — and was from the First National Bank of Fairbanks, Alaska. The family has had it in their possession ever since and recently decided to auction it off through Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. Reverie by Chris Moon Curated by John-Paul Pryor at LONDONEWCASTLE Project Space
LONDON.- In his second solo exhibition Reverie, celebrated artist Chris Moon invites the viewer to explore his psychological dreamtime – a twilight world of illusion and perception that offers a unique glimpse into his creative process via a radical celebration of paint and its transformative power. This exploration encourages us to question how we might consider a final painting differently if only we could examine the source material, see the stimuli, and extrapolate the painter’s emotional and technical perspective. Moon bravely and honestly unveils and de-mystifies an artist’s working process, taking the viewer on an emotional and enlightening voyage into the arena of his visions and dreams. Paint, the very lifeblood of his craft, gives him the power to produce incredible images of incandescent intensity. From original images to the final brushstroke Moon demands that we bear witness ... PORTLAND, ME.- On Monday, October 15 at 9 a.m., the Portland Museum of Art will install a monumental steel sculpture by celebrated artist Sir Anthony Caro. This 1500 lbs. sculpture entitled Moment (4’5” x 8’8” x 6’6”) will be lifted by a crane into the museum’s Joan B. Burns Sculpture Garden on High Street. Moment (1971) will be the PMA’s second outdoor sculpture, joining Celeste Roberge’s Raising Cairn (2000). “Moment will form the cornerstone of the museum’s story of modern sculpture,” said Jessica May, PMA’s Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art. “This work represents a critical moment for Caro’s sculptural practice, as the artist transitioned away from the brightly colored, often lyrical works of the 1960s to the varnished steel, explicitly modernist constructions that he is best known for now.” In addition to Moment, the PMA will welc ...
