A man views the newly restored painting "The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. AP Photo/Jacques Brinon.
PARIS.- The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is one of Leonardo da Vincis most ambitious compositions. Celebrated already by those having visited the Florentine masters studio in the early stages of the paintings conception, this work was the culmination of a long process occupying the artist during the last twenty years of his life. To this day, a number of questions remain unanswered, particularly as to the origin of the commission, how the painting evolved, and its early history. Recently, several historical and scientific discoveries have provided important clues, although without resolving all of the doubts surrounding this work. This exhibition aims to present the state of existing knowledge about this now restored masterpiece by bringing together, for the first time since the artists death, all of the related works and documents. One hundred and thirty works are thus presented, including two exceptional loans: the Burlington House cartoon from th ... More

Australian painter Tim Storrier's prize winning self-portrait painting titled 'The histrionic wayfarer'. AP Photo/Art Gallery NSW.
SYDNEY.- Tim Storrier was represented in last years Archibald Prize with another self-portrait without a face. Entitled Moon boy (self-portrait as a young man), the figure was represented by a suit of empty clothes hanging as if on a scarecrow in a barren landscape. This years self-portrait is, as he notes, a work in a quite different mood. It refers to a painting by Hieronymus Bosch called The wayfarer painted in 1510 where the figure is believed to be choosing a path or possibly the prodigal son returning, says Storrier. It also has other references, I believe, but they are rather clouded in biblical history and time. A carapace of burden is depicted in The histrionic wayfarer, clothed in the tools to sustain the intrigue of a metaphysical survey. Provisions, art materials, books, papers, bedding, compass and maps, all for the journey through the landscape of the artists mind, accompanied by ... More

LOS ANGELES (AP).- The government of Turkey has asked the J. Paul Getty Museum and several other American museums to return artifacts that it believes were looted. The Turkish government has contacted the Getty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection to present evidence that objects in their collections may have been illegally excavated from the country's archaeological sites, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. It has threatened to halt all loans of art to those institutions until they respond to the claims. Turkey believes the antiquities were stolen and smuggled out of the country after the passage of a 1906 law that gave the state ownership of antiquities in the ground. It is the latest country after Italy and Greece to take an aggressive stance in reclaiming stolen antiquities. "Turkey is not trying to ... More

The Colombian-born, now American artist is best known for her symmetrical, geometric abstract paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas. This exhibition provides an illuminating history and insights into the methodical process leading to Sanin's larger paintings on canvas. While each drawing can be appreciated on its own, the suites of drawings that she generates for each of her final composition evince her intricate thought process using a variety of drawing media on paper to build her final compositions. This exhibition project has been organized by New York independent art curator and writer Patterson Sims, and has an accompanying publication with all images of the nearly 100 works that are on view and ... Kirsten Hassenfeld: Cabin Fever opens at the Hunterdon Art Museum CLINTON, NJ.-The Hunterdon Art Museum announce a solo exhibition of new work by Brooklyn-based artist Kirsten Hassenfeld. The site-specific exhibition, titled Cabin Fever, opens to the public on April 1 and continue through June 3, 2012. Kirsten Hassenfeld makes extraordinary sculpture and collage with ordinary materials. She carefully saves odds and ends from her daily life, such as bottle caps, thread spools, envelopes and wrapping paper and incorporates them into complex works of art that defy expectations. In her hands, these items become multi-faceted chandeliers, highly detailed architectural forms, and abstract three-dimensional sculptures that illuminate dark rooms, often inviting the viewer to enter a private space, and, at the same, recall the vernacular handicrafts of the original American settlers. Over the years, the main ingredient in Hassenfelds work has ... More
San Francisco artist Joshua Pieper's "Nothing In Particular" on view at Romer Young Gallery SAN FRANCISCO, CA.-Romer Young Gallery presents its third solo exhibition with San Francisco artist Joshua Pieper, Nothing In Particular. The title of the show Nothing In Particular sums up the approach Joshua Pieper takes in creating an artwork. The phrase refers to something and nothing at the same time. The artists themes derive from language and Piepers attraction to art lies in double meaning, the self-referential, and the possibility of obliterating the distinctions between high and low, old and the new, found and fabricated, the real and its representation. His pieces resonate beyond their form, and are witty challenges to preconceived expectations about art and nature. Generally Im still trying to figure out the life of a given artwork, and I try to make things that beg that question. Embracing the notion that nothing is original, Pieper relishes in the struggle ... More
Titanic's legacy: A fascination with disasters NEW YORK (AP).- Epic disasters the anguished cries, the stories of heroism are the central narratives of our age, both enthralling and horrifying. And our obsession began a century ago, unfolding in just 160 terrifying minutes, on a supposedly unsinkable ship, as more than 1,500 souls slipped into the icy waters of the North Atlantic. And the band played on. It was the Titanic. And ever since, we've been hooked on disasters, in general but the tale of the great luxury liner, in particular. And the approaching 100th anniversary of the sinking has merely magnified the Titanic's fascination. There were catastrophes before that fateful Sunday night in April 1912, but nothing quite captivated the newly wireless-connected globe's attention. It was more than news. It was a macabre form of entertainment. Bigger, deadlier disasters followed, but they all borrowed from the ... More
Exhibition of new works by Eli Hansen opens at Maccarone NEW YORK, NY.-Maccarone announce an exhibition of new works by Eli Hansen. Displaying a laboratory of hand-blown glass, CFL and LED light bulbs, plastic and chopped wood locally sourced from the artist's surroundings in Upstate New York, Hansen crafts a narrative of regionalism, subterranean laboratories, the idiosyncrasy of hand and the spectral presence of a storyteller. These ethereal components congregate in the dimly lit gallery space, simulating an environment of codependence. In the penumbral light exists the murky sensation that a protagonist has been there, abandoning the audience to contemplate who will stop the chemistry set from bubbling over, or pick up the shards of a shattered beaker. In both wall pieces and freestanding sculpture, irregularities emerge from glass blown so precisely it could be mistaken as mass- produced. Hansen ... More
Scott of the Antartic's dying letter sells for £163,250 at Bonhams LONDON.- The first of the farewell letters written in the Antarctic by Captain Robert Scott as he realised that he and his team would not survive was sold at Bonhams Polar Sale in London on 30 March for £163,250. It had been estimated to make £100,000-150,000. The letter, which was found on Scotts body in November 1912, was written on the 16th March of that year to financier Sir Edgar Speyer, honorary treasurer of the fund-raising committee for the ill-fated trip. In it, Scott expresses his great concerns for his family and the families of his companions and asks that the nation provide for their future. Sensing that the position was hopeless, Scott wrote, I fear we must go...but we have been to the Pole and we shall die like gentlemen I regret only for the women we leave behind. If this diary is found it will show how we stuck by our dying companions and fought this thing ... More
National identity is topic in Aleksandra Domanović's exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel BASEL.- Monumentality and national identitywithin and beyond bordersare important topics in Aleksandra Domanović s work, which often takes place on the internet as well as she broaches this issue in a reflexive manner. From yu to me, Domanović s title for her exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, describes the breakup of former Yugoslavia. The deactivation of the international, country- specific, and top-level domain .yu (the internet country abbreviation for the nation) in 2010 can be understood as the final, symbolic elimination of the state of Yugoslavia. Yet, as the existing national identity is banned from the internet, new identities emerge. The federated states become independent and receive their own presence within the virtual world. Montenegro is registered under the domain .me and hence has also virtually become a state of its own. To that end, Domanović ... More
