SAN ANTONIO, TX.- The McNay Art Museum is presenting Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings, an extensive, celebratory survey featuring a full range of the California artist’s achievements on canvas and paper in an exhibition on view at the McNay from October 28, 2021 to January 16, 2022. Artworks drawn from the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento and the collection of the Thiebaud Family and Foundation, many of which have never been shown publicly, as well as the artist’s newest body of work, circus clowns, reveal an extraordinary, expansive practice informed by memory, tradition, and imagination. “Wayne Thiebaud is an artist’s artist,” said Richard Aste, McNay Director and CEO. “It is therefore so fitting that our Museum, which was founded by an artist, joi ... Cheim & Read opens an exhibition of paintings by Milton Resnick   Russia reopens the last czar's palace, a century after his execution   Palace of Versailles hosts the exhibition "The King's Animals"

NEW YORK, NY.- Cheim & Read is presenting Milton Resnick: Paintings 1954 - 1957. The show opened on October 26 and runs through December 17 at the gallery’s uptown location, 23 East 67th Street in New York. This is the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition with the artist; the first was in 2008, A Question of Seeing: Paintings 1958–1963. In BW and Alice, both from 1957 and on view in this exhibition, Resnick combines thick black lines, muscular shapes, and brooding color to create the building blocks of rich, jagged abstractions. They are strongly related to Low Gate, 1957, which is now in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Two other works, Untitled, 1956, and Freehold, also from 1957, attest to the fecundity of that year with their viscous, swirling brushstrokes and eruptive bursts of velvety blacks ... More

The living room in the reconstructed Alexander Palace outside of St. Petersburg, Russia, Aug. 13, 2021. Mary Gelman/The New York Times.

by Ivan Nechepurenko

ST. PETERSBURG.- Maria Ryadova recalled being in a dusty room inside the Alexander Palace, hopping from one floor beam to another and peering into the dark chasm beneath, on the day she and her team of workers made a momentous discovery. A pile of broken blue tiles had been hiding in the darkness. These shards, Ryadova knew from archival black-and-white photos, were the remains of tiles that had once adorned the walls of that room, which used to be Czar Nicholas II’s private pool and bathroom in the early 1900s. But before they were uncovered, she had never known their color. The discovery of these glossy pieces of cobalt and turquoise completed another piece of the puzzle that has been reconstructing this imperial mansion, which was once the home of the last czar of Russia and his family. “This was ... Paintings, sculptures, mounted animals, tapestries, sleds, vellums, porcelain, goldwork and more.

PARIS.- The Palace of Versailles is hosting the exhibition The King’s Animals. Some 300 works breathe new life into a spectacular artistic menagerie encompassing the thousands of animals that lived in and around the Palace during the Ancien Régime. The exhibition also sheds light on the opposition, among certain great minds of the French Court, to the Cartesian vision of animals as mere machines bereft of intelligence and sensibility. Looking at the Palace and Gardens of Versailles today, we can hardly imagine them awash in animal life. And yet the Palace was once home to dozens of companion animals, with dogs, monkeys, cats, birds and more occupying the apartments and antechambers. The now bygone Royal Menagerie featured the rarest species, from the coati to the quagga, and from beavers to black crowned cranes. Game was plentiful in the park, the royal stables accommodated 2,000 horses and the kennels held 300 hunting dogs. An ... More

PARIS.- Broken paint theory: “Throw-up”: paint spewed. The term refers to a form of quickly executed graffiti using rounded letters, which has long been Barry McGee’s signature practice. Illegal painting with an urban diffusion is like a process of contamination. Paint is corrosive, toxic, instinctual, repetitive: a ritualized and collective painting. Barry McGee has mastered the art of turnaround, which surely stems from his legendary street alias, TWIST. In his studio, graffiti extends beyond the plastic form, reaching towards experience, material, memory, attitude, an underground community. Inside or outside, Barry McGee’s painting is thus a situationist drift within anesthetized1 cities. Privatized cities where structures proliferate and hostile architecture2 blocks errant lives: the vertigo ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- For most New Yorkers, most of the time, Times Square is a challenge. Walking through the crowds of tourists, vendors, break dancing crews, and multiple Elmos and Iron Mans can be daunting when you’re just trying to make it to work. But it’s also disturbing to see the area nearly cleared out, as it was last year during the pandemic. As pedestrians slowly begin to fill the area again, a monument has been erected for those who have been there through it all. “A Fountain for Survivors,” created by Pamela Council, an artist whose works are steeped in Black American culture, is an 18-foot fountain embellished with more than 350,000 acrylic nails, on display in Times Square until Dec. 8. The hundreds of thousands of ... More

Photo book follows NYC girls' 30 years of friendship
NEW YORK, NY.- In 1985, Karen Marshall began photographing a group of teenagers in New York City. A decade older than them, her intent was to look at the emotional bonding that happens between girls at age 16 and document the emblematic relationships that often develop at this time in their lives. Marshall captured the girls’ passage into womanhood and Between Girls tells their story, both unique and universal. What began as a 35mm black and white documentary photography project evolved into a thirty-year meditation on friendship, expanding to include audio, video, and ephemera. The publication of Between Girls in 2021 marks the final resolve of this three-decade project, allowing the readers to experience the photographs along with other media elements accessible via QR codes. “In the fall of 1985, I met Molly Brover, a bright, ... Martha Henry, a leading stage actress in Canada, dies at 83
NEW YORK, NY.- For the last role of her long career, Martha Henry, one of Canada’s finest stage actors, played the character in Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women” known simply as A. Albee’s character description reads in part, “a very old woman; thin, autocratic, proud, as together as the ravages of time will allow.” As Henry took to the stage at the Stratford Festival in Ontario in August to begin the play’s two-month run, the cancer she had been dealing with for more than a year was well along. She used a walker in the first shows. In September she performed the role from a wheelchair, soldiering on in the demanding part through the final performance, on Oct. 9. She died of the disease Oct. 21 at her home in Stratford, the festival announced. She was 83. The effort Henry put into her final role — A is a dying woman, mean and prone to bursts ... More

This exhibition marks the US premiere of The Way Earthly Things Are Going, 2017, Ogboh’s internationally acclaimed work from documenta 14. The Nigerian-born, Berlin-based artist Emeka Ogboh’s multi-sensory practice explores the transient nature of culture. Ogboh refers to the “ubiquity of sonority” as a mnemonic device, creating sound and multimedia installations that prick collective memories of place. Likewise, he crafts flavors from varying regions of the world into blended gastronomic experiences, mimicking intricate narratives of migration. His practice is rooted in synthesizing sounds found in his home country of Nigeria—such as the bustle ... More

The Schick Art Gallery pens an exhibition of works by four sculptors who also create drawings and digital prints
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY.- The Schick Art Gallery presents Parallel Play, an exhibition co-curated by Skidmore Assistant Professor of Sculpture John Galt and featuring works by Chris Duncan, DeWitt Godfrey, Coral Penelope Lambert, and Mary Neubauer, four sculptors who also create drawings and digital prints. For each artist, working in two dimensions is an end in itself, as well as a means of engendering ideas. Reflecting on drawing and his development as an artist, Chris Duncan says, “I became very engaged in the immediacy of making work on paper, and much less interested in using drawings as a provisional or intermediate step toward something else.” Duncan’s sculptures and drawings play ... Russia to probe Dutch decision on Crimean gold
MOSCOW.- Russian investigators said Wednesday they will probe a Dutch court decision to transfer a priceless collection of Crimean gold to Ukraine, a ruling hailed by Kiev as a victory over Moscow. An Amsterdam court ruled this week that the pieces, dubbed "Scythian Gold" and loaned to the city's Allard Pierson Museum just before Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014, should be handed over to Ukraine. "The Netherlands made a decision to please the political situation," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement, adding that the collection had been stored "for decades" in Crimean museums. It said it had instructed investigators in the Russian-controlled peninsula to "organise a probe on the fact of a non-return of cultural items belonging to the Republic of Crimea." The head of the committee, Alexander Bastrykin, had also asked for investigators ... More

David DePatie, producer behind the Pink Panther, dies at 91
NEW YORK, NY.- David DePatie and Friz Freleng, the celebrated former Warner Bros. cartoon director, had just opened their animation studio in 1963 when filmmaker Blake Edwards hired them to design an animated character for a comedy starring Peter Sellers in his first foray as bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The character Edwards wanted was a pink panther. “We took all these drawings over to Blake’s house and laid them all on the floor and he walked around and said, ‘That’s the one I want,’ and the character was born right there,” DePatie told the Kitsap Sun, a newspaper in Bremerton, Washington, in 2010. Edwards did not know exactly how he wanted to deploy the pink panther until after he finished the film when he cast it as the star of the opening credits. Flashback
On a day like today, French artist Andre Masson died
November 28, 1987. André-Aimé-René Masson (4 January 1896 - 28 October 1987) was a French artist. Masson drew the cover of the first issue of Georges Bataille's review, Acéphale, in 1936, and participated in all its issues until 1939. His stepbrother, the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, was the last private owner of Gustave Courbet's provocative painting L'Origine du monde (The Origin of the World); Lacan asked Masson to paint a surrealist variant. In this image: Artist Roy Lichtenstein has applied his trademark benday dots to the cover of a limited edition 1985 Taittinger champagne, center. At left is a bottle designed by Victor Vasarely and on the right one by Andre Masson. All are part of the ``Art in Wine'' exhibit in Brussels' Credit Communal gallery.
