CAMBRIDGE, MASS.- The Harvard Art Museums announced the gift of Light-Relief (1960), a large-scale sculpture by internationally renowned artist Heinz Mack (b. 1931). The worka generous gift made by the artists recently established Mack Foundation in Germanyhas entered the collection of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, one of the Harvard Art Museums three constituent museums. The hand-embossed aluminum work is a cornerstone of Macks oeuvre and an example of his material experimentation during his involvement with ZERO (active 19571966), an influential artist collective that originated in Düsseldorf with Mack and his co-founder, Otto Piene, before expanding across Europe to form a larger network. Light-Relief is one of Macks earliest experiments with light articulation. In this work, light itself becomes the medium by way of the artists manipulation of industrially fabricated foil to create a broad pattern of horizontal and angled striations, said Lyn ... More
NEW YORK, NY.- Nahmad Contemporary and Skarstedt will present a focused retrospective of Georges Rouault (18711958) for the Independent 20th Century, on view September 47, 2025, at Casa Cipriani in the historic Battery Maritime Building. Spanning nearly half a century, from 1908 to 1953, the presentation brings together twenty paintings by the French modernist, offering a rare opportunity to experience the full arc of Rouaults singular career and uncompromising vision. A pivotal yet often overlooked figure, Rouault occupies a distinct place in the history of twentieth-century art. Trained by Symbolist master Gustave Moreau and initially associated with Expressionism and Fauvism, Rouault ultimately forged his own path, developing an inimitable style marked by bold, black contours, radiant color, and a profound reverence for the spiritual and the dispossessed. Magali Reus.
ZURICH.- Mai 36 Galerie announced the representation of Magali Reus (*1981, The Hague, NL, lives and works in London, UK). Magali Reuss sculptures subtly evoke the forms of everyday machines, appliances, or tools, yet their function and identity remain deliberately ambiguous. She reproduces, layers, and repeats visual elements in meticulously crafted works that involve complex techniques such as casting, moulding, CNC milling, and metalwork, placing the stark uniformity of industrial production in dialogue with the slow precision of craftsmanship. Oversized or imitative forms and objects might therefore be said to be performing and so linked with conversations of camp, of sexuality or gender. Hovering between handmade and mechanical processes, her practice destabilizes conventional readings of materiality and objecthood. Reus recent latest works have a deepened interest in ecology and systems of production, considering the tensions between constructed nature, high ... More
Jackie Gendel, Liliput, 2010, oil on canvas, 48' x 36".
NEWPORT, RI.- The Redwood Library & Athenaeum announces the opening of Recreation Myths, Jackie Gendel’s first museum exhibition, comprising seventeen paintings from the past two decades. The exhibition, titled by the artist, refers to the possibilities of painting as a medium with which to think through creation, self-creation, and the mediation of self in contemporary culture. In these paintings, Gendel asks in different ways, and from different angles: “Is one free to create the self, or is one always scaffolded?” The architectural metaphor which structures her language equally shapes her work, which unfolds in the shadows of the avant-garde city, in an interim space between inside and outside, private and public. For Gendel, the notion of “creation myths” refers less to ancient or archetypal cultural narratives than to the ideal of self-creation that runs from Socrates to the “self-made” subject of American democracy. If Gendel’s title implies that private self-creation is a myth, it may be bec ... More

Traditionally, Wright of Derby has been viewed as a figurehead of the Enlightenment, a period of scientific, philosophical and artistic development in the 17th and 18th century. Challenging this conventional view, the exhibition contributes to the ongoing re-evaluation of the artist, portraying him not merely as a painter of light but ... More

A vivid time capsule of Depression-era consumerism, with more than 800 vintage ads, it reveals how Madison Avenue didnt just sell productsit sold hope, glamor, and the great American dream.
NEW YORK, NY.- Step (or jitterbug) into the dazzling world of 1930s American advertising, where bold promises, slick design, and more than a touch of wishful thinking kept the country dreaming through the Great Depression. While wallets tightened, creativity soaredglossy magazine pages teemed with cheerful, colorful ads selling everything from beauty creams to Hawaiian vacations, all wrapped in an air of optimism that defied the hard times. At the dawn of the decade, the sleek, modernist aesthetics of European avant-garde design shook up the industry, introducing stylized, symbolic, and even abstract ads that emphasized visuals over words. But as reality set in, admen pivoted to a more hard-sell approach, favoring bold headlines, big promises, and down-to-earth pitches that resonated with a nation struggling to get by. HONG KONG.- Kiang Malingue presents at Frieze Seoul a selection of recent works on paper by Taiwanese artist Tseng Chien-Ying. Drawn from several celebrated series, the paintings are the latest development of the artist's deepened exploration of recurrent themes and subjects over the last decade, demonstrating his ability to astutely reflect contemporary life by transforming classical artistic techniques. Tsengs ink brush and gouache paintings are known for examining and splicing highly personal subjects and religious motifs. His works are often informed by the iconography of Buddhist art to imbue his characters with solemn, dignified, and meditative expressions, in an array of psychedelic colours to create a strange, disharmonious atmosphere. Tsengs figures occupy the compositions by discovering an eerily spiritual dimension of contemporary life, revealing ambiguous emotions ... More
