VENICE.- Already 52 years ago, Heinz Mack, who is one of the most important representatives of kinetic art worldwide, represented Germany at the 35th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. In 2014, the artist of ZERO group, who developed his own language in light art in the 1950s, was on display parallel to the Biennale Architettura with his 7.5-meter-high installation The Sky Over Nine Columns, consisting of nine golden, light-reflecting pillars, in front of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Now the German sculptor and painter, who turned 90 last year, returns to Venice with an extensive solo exhibition within the section Collateral Events of the Biennale Arte 2022. From April 23 to July 17, 2022, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (Ministero della Cultura), located directly on St. Mark's Square, presents the Collateral Event with the selected works by the award-winning artist under the title "Heinz Mack - Vibr ... Scottish Artist Katie Paterson with Requiem, an exhibition which tells the life of the planet in a single work. shows the birth. It is to go on display for the first time at Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh from this week. Until 11 June.
EDINBURGH.- In the centre of the gallery (a simple, light-filled cube some eleven metres square) will stand a single plinth. On it, will sit a large jar, a glass urn, the ancient form of funerary vessel. Around the walls a long shelf will hold a series of small vials, 370 of them in all, each containing a tablespoon of dust, 21g of powdered matter the posited weight of a human soul each one a layer of time waiting to be poured, into the urn. The dust has been obtained through collaboration with institutions and collections worldwide, including the European Space Agency, the Danish Geological Survey and the British Antarctic Survey. Collectively, the vials map the story of the earth from before its existence to the present day, and offer a lament for the planet, a warning, a requiem on the theme of extinction. Katie Paterson remarks Ive always made artworks that deal with nature and time and climate, but this is the first that isnt afraid to be political and confron ... More
Thai Jones, a Columbia University archivist, holds one of the thousands of letters written to Michael James Brody Jr. in January 1970, after he announced he would give away his $25 million inheritance, in New York, March 24, 2022. Vincent Tullo/The New York Times.
by Jennifer Schuessler
NEW YORK, NY.- One day in early January 1970, Michael James Brody Jr. stepped off a Pan Am jet at John F. Kennedy Airport and into what would be one of the new decades shortest, strangest 15 minutes of fame. Brody, the previously obscure 21-year-old heir to a margarine fortune, was returning from his honeymoon in Jamaica and, as a grand romantic gesture, had impulsively bought out every seat on the plane so he and his bride could fly home alone. After landing, Brody, wearing bell-bottoms and large green sunglasses, announced to assembled reporters that he would be giving away his $25 million fortune to ordinary people to spread love and cure the problems of the world. Over the next 10 days, the shaggy-haired, dreamily handsome Brody appeared on newspaper front pages and The Ed Sullivan Show, ... More
Shoppers pass the "Walking Figure" statue by Donald Baechler at the Aventura Mall in Aventura, Fla., Jan. 10, 2020. Scott McIntyre/The New York Times.
by Roberta Smith
NEW YORK, NY.- Donald Baechler was part of one of the most exciting moments in postwar art in New York, the early 1980s, when talented artists, if usually male and young, were popping up all over the landscape. Many of them including Baechler, Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Philip Taaffe were combining painting and collage in new ways while also using existing images, often enlarged. Their talent for drawing vividly handmade art objects, as well as recognizable images, fueled a trend that was greeted by some as the second coming of pop art. These artists and many others who arrived in the early 1980s solidified the return of painting as both an aesthetic endeavor and a market phenomenon. Baechlers art certainly did its share. But he didnt quite get the same respect as others of his generation. His work was inaccurately associated with graffiti art and considered ingratiating. ... More

This important milestone in Norwegian history will be commemorated throughout the whole country with a Year of Queer Culture. By presenting narratives of gender and sexual diversity from both the past and the present, KODE Art Museum will throughout the year challenge the invisibility that shrouds the stories of LGBT+ people. In Norway, scant research has been done on queer art, culture and history. KODE want to inspire conversations, debates and engagement that in turn will influence how the museum work, collect and present art in ... More
Patrick Wilson, Lady Luck, 2021, Acrylic on canvas, 39 x 66 inches, 99.1 x 167.6 cm.
NEW YORK, NY.-Miles McEnery Gallery opened an exhibition of recent diptychs by Patrick Wilson. The artists fifth solo exhibition with the gallery will open on 28 April at 515 West 22nd Street and remain on view through 4 June 2022. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by Dan Cameron. Patrick Wilsons paintings invite consideration of both what is seen within its composition and what is known behind its inner workings. Planes of indefinable blends and hues of color penetrate and shift across one another, articulating the presence of the picture plane and the potential for shifting. Wilsons paintings allow multiple points of entry, which, with time, move the eye through and across a space that is unknowable but always generous in its offering. Wilson, a Los Angeles based painter, employs techniques influenced by California movements, including Light ... More
George Romney Screen. Lakeland Arts.
KENDAL.-Lakeland Arts has received a four-paneled painted screen created by English portrait painter George Romney (1734-1802). The work has been allocated to Lakeland Arts for the nation through HM Government Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax Scheme by the Estate of Patricia Jaffé, administered by Arts Council England. The painted screen now enters the Abbot Hall Collection permanently, alongside several other Romney pieces acquired by Lakeland Arts throughout its 65-year history. Dated by Alex Kidson as belonging to the early stages of the painters career, it is believed the screen was painted during Romneys early years in London, from 1762 onwards. The work takes its inspiration from the publication of engravings of wall paintings discovered in Pompeii in 1749 and circulated throughout Europe in Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte (Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed), first published in 1757. Jan Pleitner, Vortex 1, 2022, oil on canvas, 230 x 160 cm / 90.6 x 63 in.
DUBLIN.-Kerlin Gallery is presenting temperatures of time, an exhibition of new paintings by Jan Pleitner. Completed in a rural location in 2022, the paintings in temperatures of time use colour, shape and surface to visualise the universe and the forces at play within it. At times, Pleitners primordial forms feel rooted in nature, evoking the dense thronging of foliage or celestial bodies ascending in the sky. Elsewhere, arching lines in deep colours give shape to a more cosmic plane, picturing forces beyond our visual ability or comprehension: flashing bands of colour, forming a leaky kaleidoscope of surface texture. In both instances, his complex, heady paintings feel both familiar and strange, as if tapping into a primal or universal language that we innately understand. Describing his process as emotional and intuitive, Pleitner approaches painting as a way to visualise phenomena that cannot be rational ... More

The Brazilian jazz great Flora Purim has many stories to tell NEW YORK, NY.- Once, at a Miles Davis concert, Flora Purim was sitting alone. Janis Joplin took the seat next to her, and a friendship was born. Upon moving to New Jersey, Purim discovered that she was neighbors with João Gilberto. He invited her over and beat her at Ping-Pong. In 1965, at the João Sebastião Bar in São Paulo, Purim was installed as the singer with a band called Sambalanço Trio; on drums was her future partner, Airto Moreira. Chance, one could say, has played an outsize role in her life. But skill not luck is what made Purim a star of the 1970s jazz scene. A nimble, inventive vocalist steeped in the mystical, Purim made a near-immediate splash when she moved to New York from Brazil in 1967. After an ill-fated run with Stan Getz for one thing, she didnt want to sing The Girl from Ipanema, feeling it belonged ... More
Cosmic stories: Du Yun revisits her earliest music theater NEW YORK, NY.- When composer Du Yun was a doctoral student at Harvard in the early 2000s, she felt like a fish out of water. Very much out of water, Du, 44, said in a recent interview. It was my first time not in a conservatory setting since I was 6. But Du now the Pulitzer Prize-winning conjurer of exhilaratingly elusive and often moving sound worlds did have a rich community of artistic collaborators. She was a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble, the group of new-music specialists started in 2001 by flutist Claire Chase, a fellow Oberlin conservatory graduate. And when the ensemble had an opportunity to create an original work of theater, Du, who was resistant to opera, instead wanted to stage a set of songs. I just began writing stories, she said, as an exercise. And then I used those stories ... More

Sasha Waltz's 'In C' marries choreography and improvisation BERLIN.- I started in the deep lockdown, said German choreographer Sasha Waltz. Everything was closed. And it was in the winter. It was gray, and everybody was depressed. And we said, we have to keep working. We cannot go on like this. The hourlong work, set to Terry Rileys 1964 composition a milestone of minimal music will be performed Thursday through Saturday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where Waltz and company performed frequently before the pandemic. 'A Strange Loop' Review: A dazzling ride on a mental merry-go-round NEW YORK, NY.- When the homophobic, God-fearing, Tyler Perry-loving mother of Usher, protagonist of remarkable musical A Strange Loop, describes her sons art, she uses the word radical. She doesnt mean it as a compliment. But A Strange Loop, Michael R. Jacksons Pulitzer Prize-winning meta musical about a Black queer mans self-perception in relation to his art, is radical. And I definitely mean that as a compliment. This musical, a production of Page 73, Playwrights Horizons and Woolly Mammoth Theater Company, forgoes the commercial niceties and digestible narratives of many Broadway shows, delivering a story thats searing and softhearted, uproarious and disquieting. A Strange Loop, which opened Tuesday night, isnt just the musical I saw in the packed Lyceum Theater a few evenings ago; its also ... More
