Known for her disconcerting replicas of works by her contemporaries that would become iconic, Sturtevant's practice challenges the prevailing discourse around originality and authenticity in art. NEW YORK, NY.- Art can play a powerful role in depicting Ukraine’s suffering at the hands of Russia because of its unique ability to convey emotion and loss, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told an audience at the Venice Biennale on Thursday. Zelenskyy, speaking by video, added that all tyrannies oppose free artistic expression because of its capacity to illustrate moral wrongs. “There are no tyrannies that would not try to limit art because they can see the power of art,” he said, in a clear reference to President Vladimir Putin of Russia. “Art can tell the world what cannot otherwise be shared. VENICE.- “What happened to free speech in Italy?” shouted one of the 50 or so onlookers Wednesday morning as a security guard stood in front of a lone anti-war protester at the Venice Biennale, trying to block out his message. Berlin-based Russian artist Vadim Zakharov had just unfurled a banner in front of the shuttered national pavilion where he represented his country at the 2013 Biennale. The two artists and curator who were set to present work for Russia in this year’s edition pulled out in February after Russia invaded Ukraine. The pavilion has been closed ever since. ATLANTA, GA.- Vivid and colorful oil on canvas paintings by Syd Solomon (American, 1917-2004) and Henri Hecht Maik (French, 1922-1993) each brought $20,000, while a classical early 20th century Continental School semi-nude female marble sculpture finished at $21,250 in Ahlers & Ogletree’s two-day, two-session Spring Estates & Collections auction held April 9th and 10th. The semi-nude female marble sculpture was the auction’s overall top lot in a sale that grossed a little more than $1.2 million (all prices quoted include a 25 percent buyer’s premium). I downloaded it, input my New York Public Library card number and proceeded to binge. I devoured everything by and about Isaac Babel, who wrote stories based on his life in early-20th-century Odesa, and all of Mick Herron’s Slough House books, about a group of sad, incompetent British spies. Libby was created by OverDrive, a Cleveland-based company that digitizes books and other publications and distributes them to 90% of North American libraries.
