Patricia Fleming Gallery presents intimate Kevin Hutcheson retrospective in Glasgow
Emerging from Glasgows influential 1990s grassroots and post-punk scene, Hutcheson developed an aesthetic grounded in material immediacy and an economy of means.
GLASGOW.—
Marking the tenth anniversary of the artist's passing, Autumn Maze brings together an extraordinary selection of collage works, notebooks, and archival material from the Kevin Hutcheson Estate. Curated as an intimate retrospective, the exhibition serves as a preview for the forthcoming monograph, Kevin Hutcheson: New Town Blues the first comprehensive publication dedicated to evaluating the legacy of this vital figure in contemporary Scottish art.
Emerging from Glasgows influential 1990s grassroots and post-punk scene, Hutcheson developed an aesthetic grounded in material immediacy and an economy of means. Utilising found ephemeranewspaper clippings, second-hand books, and painted sandpaperhe crafted a razor-sharp, politically engaged, and mordantly comic body of work. His paper compositions draw fluidly from Linder Sterling, British Pop Art, and Dadaist cut-up poetry to interrogate consumerism, digital media, masculinity, and class.
Born in Blantyre, Scotland and educated at Duncan of Jordanstone and Chelsea College of Art, Hutcheson was a central figure among a renowned generation of Glasgow artists including Lucy McKenzie and Michael Fullerton. Deeply revered as an artists artist, his uncompromising practice earned widespread respect prior to his death in 2016. The upcoming monograph will feature critical essays, interviews, and extensive visual plates documenting his contribution to collage and post-conceptual practice in the UK.
