MADRID.- The head of the Reina Sofia Museum, Manuel Borja Villel, has announced today a collaborative agreement with the Prado Museum that will allow some of the works of art belonging to the Prado to be shown at the contemporary art museum, abiding by the law that regulates the separation of the collections.

"The aim is that both state museums work together, which means that soon there will be works of art from the Prado here", said Borja Villel at a press conference at the Reina Sofia.

The museum director has stated that “to understand painters such as Zuluaga or Solana it is necessary to know Goya”, without whom modern art cannot be understood.

With this mission, Goya will be present in the new dialogue of the permanent collection which Borja Villel has designed in the 6,000 square meters of exhibition space which will open in May, with between ten and fifteen engravings, still to be determined.

The loan of these engravings is the result of several conversations held between the head of the Prado, Miguel Zugaza, and the director of the Reina Sofia, which ended with an agreement. The loans will not only include works by Goya and will not affect the collections of each museum. “We are not talking about acquiring, we are talking about enriching” our offering. The important point is to show the collections. He added, “We want to unite efforts and ideas to show a plural history of art”.

The director of the Reina Sofia said that at this point there is no confirmed petition for works made to the Prado. “We have to see what we need, and of course it will not exceed ten engravings, which will be rotated”. He also did not specify if they will belong to the Disasters of War or to the Caprichos series. He also did not say how long the agreement will be held, but that it will be longer than a temporary exhibition.
