AMSTERDAM.- The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has appointed Behrang Mousavi as Head of Collection Management. Mousavi has served as interim Head of Collection Management since the beginning of the year and will continue to be responsible for the department’s policy and daily operations.

Behrang Mousavi is an experienced museologist, curator, and heritage specialist with a broad background in the cultural sector. He worked for many years at the former Netherlands Architecture Institute and later at Het Nieuwe Instituut, where, as Head of the National Collection for Architecture and Urban Planning, he led one of the most important heritage collections in the Netherlands. Before that, he held various positions with the Municipality of The Hague, including curator and museum policy officer.

Alongside his leadership roles, Mousavi is active as a board member and advisor, including as Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) and the Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam.

Rein Wolfs, Director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: “Over the past period, Behrang has led the Collection Management department with great authority and vision. His strategic insight, deep care for the collection, and inspiring collaborative approach make him an invaluable force within the museum. We are delighted that he will now continue his work as a permanent member of our team.”

Behrang Mousavi: “The Stedelijk Museum holds a world-class collection that is not only of great artistic value but also deeply relevant to how we understand our society. To me, art is not a luxury but a necessity — a powerful means to connect, to reflect, and to open new perspectives. I look forward to continuing to build, together with my team, the future of this remarkable collection and the stories it tells.”

The Collection Management department is responsible for the physical and digital care of the Stedelijk’s collection, comprising around 100,000 objects. The team oversees conservation, restoration, storage, registration, and documentation, and plays a central role in making the collection accessible for the public, research, and presentation. As Head of Collection Management, Mousavi is also a member of the museum’s management team.
