The Hamptons art scene is set to welcome back celebrated Irish Modern Impressionist,
Gerard Byrne, with his captivating new solo exhibition, “Stillness in Motion: Seeing Light Anew.” Opening Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at the newly launched Slattery Gallery, the show promises a vibrant exploration of light and landscape, spanning local scenes to his native Ireland.
The exhibition, running through Monday, October 13th, will feature more than twenty original works, offering a comprehensive look at Byrne’s acclaimed versatility. A significant highlight for local enthusiasts will be the debut of eight new plein air paintings, capturing the unique beauty and elusive light of Southampton. These will be complemented by a selection of Byrne’s signature large-scale studio pieces, including evocative figurative works, serene still lifes, and powerful seascapes. Visitors will also find three paintings depicting Byrne’s home country of Ireland, further showcasing his diverse range and deep connection to his artistic roots. Byrne, renowned for his vibrant palette, expressive brushwork, and masterful contrasts of light and shadow, expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the East End. "There’s something about the Hamptons light that brings the work alive," he commented. "I’m delighted to be back in Southampton—this time with a full body of work and space to let it breathe."
The exhibition also marks a significant official launch for the Slattery Gallery itself, a new space poised to become a cultural cornerstone in Southampton Village. John Slattery, the gallery's Irish-born founder and a new Southampton resident, shared his excitement. "I couldn’t be more excited to officially launch the Gallery showcasing Gerard Byrne’s work, a talent I have long admired and respected," Slattery said. "My vision for the space is to allow the art find an appreciative audience, to explore and immerse in a diverse range of genres; an aspect that Gerard so elegantly depicts through the various styles of painting."
Adding to the prestige, the VIP Reception on opening day, August 30th, will be hosted by famed photographer Patrick McMullan. Slattery noted, "It’s an honor to have the highly respected Patrick McMullan host the opening for us, further underpinning the Irish connection." Some of Byrne's works in the exhibit were previewed at the recent Hamptons Fine Art Fair, building anticipation for this comprehensive solo show.
About the Artist: Gerard Byrne Gerard Byrne is widely regarded as Ireland’s foremost Modern Impressionist. Over 35 years, his prolific career has established a distinctive style characterized by a vibrant palette, dynamic brushwork, and masterful use of light and shadow, elements that evoke the work of the Impressionist Masters. His acclaimed oil paintings are held in prestigious collections globally, including the Irish Government, Irish Embassies, and the Citadelle Art Museum in Texas, USA. In 2017, he co-founded the Gerard Byrne Studio in Dublin, a dedicated 1,500 sq ft space showcasing his immersive artistic practice and serving as a creative hub.
Slattery Gallery is located at 30A Jobs Lane in the heart of Southampton Village, Slattery Gallery is a new exhibition space focused on Irish and American Contemporary Art, as well as exceptional Post-War and Modern masterworks. Founder John Slattery, a native of Ireland, opened the gallery to showcase outstanding works from his homeland and his adopted home of Southampton.
