LONDON.- GRIMM announced its expansion to a new gallery space in St James’s, opening to the public this fall to coincide with Frieze Week in October.

The new gallery will be situated on the ground and lower floor of 43a Duke Street, St James’s, a prominent corner site in a historical late Victorian building.

As founder Jorg Grimm shares, “We are proud to be moving to this iconic neighbourhood in London that for centuries has been a historical base for the display of art. Following the gallery’s establishment in London in 2022, our expansion is a logical progression, and in line with the gallery’s goal – to provide the best possible platform for our artists, many of them based in the UK. The gallery prides itself on its active management of all aspects of an artist's career, the foundation on which the gallery has been built. Our program continues to grow and we’re very excited to be able to provide this new space, and the context of the neighbourhood, for our artists to present their work in London going forward.”

43a Duke Street, St James’s will open with a solo exhibition of new paintings by Matthias Weischer.

GRIMM is an international contemporary art gallery with locations in Amsterdam (NL), New York, NY (US) and London (UK). The gallery currently represents thirty-seven international artists, working in a variety of media. Founded in 2005, the gallery’s mission has been to represent and support the work of emerging and mid-career artists.

In addition to the exhibitions that the gallery programs internationally, GRIMM maintains an in-house publishing series that provides further critical insights into its artists' practices.

GRIMM is a member of the International Galleries Alliance (IGA), Dutch Galleries Association (NGA) and the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).

Matthias Weischer's (b.1973 in Elte, (DE), lives and works in Leipzig) paintings depict domestic interior scenes and landscapes that challenge the viewer’s perception of space. One of the foremost painters of his generation, Weischer has refined his technique by repeatedly crafting and restaging compositions, often drawing from his own studio as a point of departure. He gradually builds thick layers of pigment on the canvas, creating surfaces alive with rich texture. This approach allows for a striking interplay between intricate detail and elusive space. In his recent work, Weischer constructs enigmatic interiors that suggest a fleeting human presence. Each room captures a moment suspended in time; the sparse furniture and signs of disrepair evoke a sense of abandonment. The uncanny atmosphere is heightened by the recurring presence of paintings within the depicted spaces, resulting in a disorienting layering of dimensions.

Weischer studied at the Leipzig Academy, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 2000 and his Master’s degree in 2003. In 2004, Weischer was chosen as the protégé of the British artist David Hockney through the Rolex Mentor & Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2005 Weischer participated in the Prague Biennial 2 (CZ) and the 51st Venice Biennial (IT).

Recent exhibitions include: OUR HOUSE, Museum Giersch of the Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main (DE), 2024; Matthias Weischer, with Wolfram Ebersbach, Marburger Kunstverein (DE), 2024; Arcadia, Kewenig Gallery, Berlin (DE), 2024; Licked by the Waves | New Bathers in Art, Museum MORE, Gorssel (NL), 2024; True Colors, AkzoNobel Art Foundation at the Kunstmuseum, The Hague (NL), 2024; Sequence, GRIMM, New York, NY (US), 2023; STANZE, Fondazione Coppola, Vicenza (IT), 2023; Wo Man Sich Trifft / Where We Meet, curated by Juriaan Benschop, Emsdettener Kunstverein (DE), 2023 and Celebrating 20 years of mentoring, EMST, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (GR), 2023.
