NEW PALTZ, NY.- The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz shared details about exciting exhibitions opening this fall 2024:

"In & Out of Lineage: Tracing Artistic Heritage Through SUNY New Paltz Faculty": Featuring work from 20 SUNY New Paltz Art and Design faculty members, “In and Out of Lineage” examines artistic lineage, how traditions are preserved or evolved through pedagogy, and how both knowledge and inspiration are transferred between students and their mentors. On display Sept. 7 – Dec. 8, 2024

"Mis/Communication: Language and Power in Contemporary Art": Showcases video, sculpture, drawing, and interactive media artworks by contemporary artists who explore the power of language in a cultural context. On display through Nov. 3, 2024

Together, these exhibitions provide visitors with unique insights into historical undercurrents and contemporary trends in both regional and national art.

The Dorsky Museum will host a Fall Season Opening Party to celebrate these new offerings on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 5 – 7 p.m. The free event will feature an evening of refreshments, performance, art, music and fellowship.

“In & Out of Lineage”

"In & Out of Lineage: Tracing Artistic Heritage Through SUNY New Paltz Faculty" explores the dynamic interplay between teaching and creating. Featuring art from 20 SUNY New Paltz Art and Design faculty, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how traditions are preserved or evolved through pedagogy. By including reflections on artistic lineage from each of the exhibiting artists, the presentation illuminates the reciprocal relationship between teachers and students in the transfer of knowledge and inspiration.

“Mis/Communication”

"Mis/Communication: Language and Power in Contemporary Art" features video, sculpture, drawing, and interactive media by 16 contemporary artists who explore the role language plays mediating social and political exchanges throughout the world. The exhibition prompts reflection on how language serves as a means of connection yet is also entangled within often unjust and estranging power dynamics. Through a wide variety of styles and approaches, the artworks address topics such as the global dominance of English, the colonial legacies embedded in languages, and socially marginalized linguistic practices.
