For the Love of Beauty: British Arts and Crafts

ITHACA, N.Y.- The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell presents For the Love of Beauty: British Arts and Crafts at the Turn of the Century, through December 19. The high point of the Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain is characterized by the fine metalwork and particularly work in silver by C. R. Ashbee, Archibald Knox, who worked for Liberty, Christopher Dresser, and Rex Silver. Ralph Whitehead, one of the founders of Byrdcliffe, knew Ashbee and visited him in London; Ashbee came to America many times on lecture tours and stayed with the Whiteheads in 1915. This connection between British and American Arts and Crafts is an important part of Byrdcliffe’s contribution to the era. With a recent gift of this material to the Johnson Museum from Isabel and William Berley, this exhibition will highlight works that reflect the influence of the British style on American Arts and Crafts. The exhibition will be accompanied by drawings, books, and photographs from the period.
