NEW YORK.- The real pioneers of the 1950s/’60s Space Race were neither Russian cosmonauts nor American astronauts - they were animals. The most famous of all space canines was Laika, a stray found on the streets of Moscow who was trained and placed aboard Sputnik 2 (1957). Sadly, Laika died within hours of Sputnik 2’s launch, due to overheating. Other Russian space dogs would follow, including Belka and Strelka, who actually wore the cotton, nylon, rubber and aluminum suit shown here while training. It is also presumed that one of them wore the suit while on board Sputnik 5 (1960). Both pups returned to earth safely. This historical canine space suit is featured in LiveAuctioneer's online catalog for Auctionata’s Sept. 13 Soviet Space Memorabilia Auction. LIVEAUCTIONEERS/AUCTIONATA PHOTO
