BERLIN.- C/O Berlin, International Forum For Visual Dialogues, presents the exhibition On Street by German photographer Peter Linderbergh from 25 September 2010 to 9 January.

Powerful and fragile, straightforward and playful, emancipated and sensual—Peter Lindbergh’s photographs are far more than artistic, coolly remote fashion photographs. His melancholy, unembellished photographs of mostly female models reveal, behind the artificial styling and makeup, an intimate glimpse of their inner essence. With subjects including Sharon Stone, Madonna, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Naomi Campbell, Jeanne Moreau, Penélope Cruz, Catherine Deneuve, and Uma Thurman, Lindbergh employs sensitivity and a reduction to the essential to find the individual behind the star cult and to present her in all her strength and fragility.

Naturalism is Peter Lindbergh’s maxim. He breaks with the perfect artificiality of the theatrically exaggerated, ostentatiously bored model pose, and in so doing injects new dynamism into fashion photography. Even when his photographs are carefully staged, they often look like casual snapshots or documentary photos, with a dismal, almost surreal atmosphere and purist aesthetic. Peter Lindbergh does without the use of dominant backgrounds or extra decoration, employing a clear, expressive visual language, usually in delicate black and white tones. He is a visual storyteller, often arranging his photographs based on famous film scenes or working with photographic quotes to cast the personalities of those portrayed in sharper relief. For Lindbergh, fashion is just an excuse to make a picture or tell a story, to capture the lifestyle that forms the very core of an individual’s being and that simultaneously documents a piece of cultural history.

C/O Berlin presents 120 photographs and films from the oeuvre of Peter Lindberg —from his classics and icons of fashion photography to his Vogue Berlin series of 2009. Including never-before published Archive-Polaroids as well as documentary films, the exhibition provides insights into the star photographer’s approach to his work. Accompanying the exhibition a catalogue will be published at Schirmer/Mosel.

Peter Lindbergh, born in 1944 in Lissa, Poland, is one of the most renowned fashion photographers worldwide. He spent his childhood in Duisburg and completed an apprenticeship as a window dresser in 1963. He went on to study design and painting in Berlin and Krefeld. In 1971, Lindbergh became a photographic assistant to Hans Lux and in 1973 began working on his own as a free-lance fashion photographer. His professional breakthrough came with the publication of his first fashion photos in Stern in 1978. Soon thereafter, Peter Lindbergh moved to Paris and began publishing his work in all the major international fashion magazines from Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar to The New Yorker and Rolling Stone. He has worked for important fashion designers such as Prada, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander, and Karl Lagerfeld. In 1995 and 1997, he received the International Fashion Award as the best photographer in Paris. Since 1995, he has been a member of the exclusive German Art Directors Club. In 1996, Peter Lindberg received the Raymond Loewy Foundation’s Award, the most important European design prize. This year, he received the Lead award for best photography. The Pushkin Museum in Moscow showed photography for the first time in 2002 with a big Peter Lindbergh retrospective. His work has been exhibited in the big museums around the world. Along with his photography, Lindbergh has shot commercials, documentaries, and music videos for Tina Turner, die Toten Hosen, and many others. His thirty-minute documentary film “Inner Voices” has also received many awards. Since 1996, his photographs have been published in numerous books. Peter Lindbergh lives and works in Paris, New York, and Arles.
