17th Century Portrait Returns to Lydiard House
LONDON.- The Art Fund has helped return an important 17th century portrait to Lydiard House in Swindon.

The portrait of Robert Rich, 3rd Earl of Warwick, has come back to the stately home after almost 70 years in a private collection.

Art Fund director Stephen Deuchar said: "We’re really pleased to have helped bring this portrait back home to Lydiard House, where the public will be able to appreciate it in the context of its original and historic surroundings. We are really grateful to the ongoing support of our members, without whom we wouldn’t be able to fund all kinds of acquisitions for museums, galleries and stately homes across the UK."

Sophie Cummings, Collections Manager at Lydiard House, said: "This is one of the last "lost" paintings to return to Lydiard House. This portrait hung in the state bedroom until 1943, when it was included in a huge auction of the contents of the house.

The portrait of Robert Rich, 3rd Earl of Warwick (1611 – 1659) is attributed to the famous 17th Century society artist John Greenhill. The Richs are prominently shown on the painted triptych in St Mary’s Church at Lydiard Park.

The Art Fund was among several funding bodies that helped bring the painting home. Money also came from the MLA/V&A Purchase grant fund and Friends of Lydiard Park.
