T. Höpker, Muhammad Ali's First, Lambda Print, 1966.

BERLIN.- Auctionata has set a new auction record for a sold work by the artist Alfredo Jaar during the “Circle of Life” auction last Saturday, June 18.

Bidding for the lightbox installation installation The Silence (1987) started at €8,000 until it was eventually sold for €75,000 (incl. Buyer’s premium) to a bidder in Germany.

Alfredo Jaar (b. 1956) works especially in the field of installation, dealing with political issues such as immigration and genocide. He also examines the influence of media and his own role as a producer of images. Jaar has repeatedly exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel, as well as at the Venice Biennial.

Auctionata’s specialist for Post-War & Contemporary Art Julia Mauersberger remarks: “We are very excited that the installation The Silence of the Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar, who was also represented by various galleries at Art Basel this year, achieved the highest recorded result in the auction market.”

The online auction was presented in cooperation with the Teutloff Photo + Video Collection and dealt with the representation of the human body in contemporary photography. It was co-hosted by the photography expert and publicist Prof. Klaus Honnef.

Other notable results in the sale were:

• Wolfgang Tillmans, Tube Lines, 4 C-Prints, 2000/01 (Starting price €4,000 – sold for €23,750 incl. BP)

• Jack Pierson, Self-Portrait #25, Pigment Print in Colors, 2005 (Starting price €10,000 – sold for €18,750 incl. BP),
