NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s upcoming New York auction of Important Watches on 10 December 2013 will feature a collection of timepieces assembled by a single collector with a thoroughly modern and masculine aesthetic. The focused selection of 55 pieces comprises rare and limited series wristwatches, many featuring complications, by famed makers such as Audemars Piguet, Panerai and IWC, among others. The collection and full auction are on exhibition in Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries.

F.P. Journe
A Fine and Rare Platinum Tourbillon Wristwatch with
Constant Force Remontoire and Power Reserve

The present example is one of five in the collection featuring a tourbillons, demonstrating the collector’s strong interest in complicated horological movements. Launched in 1999, the Tourbillon Souverain d'Egalité marked the first usage of a constant force remontoire in a wristwatch. The combination of both remontoire and tourbillon is a testimony to F. P. Journe's cutting-edge technical genius in the creation of complicated modern wristwatches firmly rooted in horological tradition.

This limited edition Royal Oak Offshore chronograph was designed in collaboration with American basketball player Shaquille O'Neal. His jersey number, 32, is reflected on the dial by the red numerals 3 and 2. The watch is complemented by a basketball-form presentation box. Upon its release, this model was an immediate classic, beloved by basketball enthusiasts and watch collectors alike.

Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak Offshore Alinghi Chronograph in 2007, celebrating the anniversary of the victory of the Swiss yachting team, Alinghi. Forged carbon was the chosen innovative material for this exceptional timepiece – as a result, the case of the watch weighs only 100 grams. This watch was produced in a limited series of 1300 pieces, of which the present example is number 185.
