Merribell Parsons named Curator of European Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art
Merribell Parsons' area of specialization is European art history (17th-19th century) with a focus on sculpture and decorative arts.
SAN ANTONIO, TX.- The San Antonio Museum of Art announced the appointment of Merribell Parsons to the new position of Curator of European Art. Parsons’ distinguished career has included positions as Chief Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Assistant Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, and Director and CEO of the Columbus Museum of Art. Her area of specialization is European art history (17th-19th century) with a focus on sculpture and decorative arts.

“Merribell brings a depth of experience and breadth of knowledge rare anywhere in the United States,” said Katie Luber, Kelso Director. “We are beyond honored to have her extraordinary connoisseurship to assess our collection and its potential and to help us tell a more complete story about world art through our European collection.”

The Museum has a small but choice selection of European art including riches in porcelain and silver, donated by Gilbert Denman and others. Ms. Parsons will also lead a newly formed Visiting Committee for European Art of staff and collectors, which will articulate the goals for the European collection and approve acquisitions.

“I’m not just returning to my native city, but to my first love—working with objects again,” said Ms. Parsons. “The art scene has taken off since I lived here many years ago. There’s now a cadre of important and dedicated art enthusiasts.”

Ms. Parsons received her ABD (all but dissertation) and her Master of Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York City.
