NEW YORK, NY.- Bonhams announced the inaugural auction of Judaica to be held at the Bonhams New York Madison Avenue salesroom on December 9, 2013. The auction will include significant historical and religious items that represent the cultural and social movements of the Jewish people from ancient through modern times. Pre-war and post-war Judaica from Israel, Europe and the Americas will be considered from such diverse fields as fine art, books and historical manuscripts, textiles, liturgical items, coins, medals, jewelry and decorative arts.

The auction will be overseen by Bonhams' recently appointed Judaica Consultant, Dr Rachael B Goldman. Dr Goldman received her Ph.D. in History from City University of New York - The Graduate Center in 2011, and has held fellowships from the American Academy in Rome, the New York Classical Club and the College Art Association. She has been a member of the American Association of Appraisers since 2002, and has worked for many esteemed institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. Versed in several languages including Latin, Greek, Italian and Hebrew, Dr Goldman has taught at Adelphi University and the Cooper Hewitt M.A. program in Decorative Arts. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at The College of New Jersey.

For Dr Goldman, consulting with Bonhams is a meaningful opportunity to place Judaica of significance in private collections, where it can be appreciated and enjoyed as originally intended. She believes that everyday contact with items of importance is an enriching experience without parallel.

The inaugural sale in December will celebrate the spectacular diversity of Jewish culture. By situating each item in its proper historical and cultural context, Dr Goldman hopes to present Judaica to a wider audience and engage with a younger generation. Items that illuminate the complex nature of Jewish identity worldwide will be of particular importance.

Bonhams Judaica auction will take place on December 9 in New York.
