Tow Truck Companies Near Me Getting Complaints of Overcharging

Khalid Hamodi, a Dearborn Heights resident was not only going through the hour of his basement quickly filling with water reaching around five feet but he also had to pay outrageous fees to have his son's car towed out of the flooded street. While towing your car that is flooded with water is something that has to be done, the owners of the car do not need the added stress of an outrageous fee for the tow job. J&M Towing is the company that Hamodi used, and after the car was picked up, it was then moved to the company's yard. What Hamodi was not told was that there would be an additional $465 fee for the car being held at the tow yard even for just a couple of hours.

Hamodi was told by a police officer that the fee from the towing company would not go over the price of $150. When the police chief, Daniel Voltattorni, was asked about it, he stated that he knew the fees for towing the car would be between $125 and $250, but that the fee charge would depend on the service that was used. The owner of J&M, Darryl Jameson, stated that the police chief quoted the right cost, and he even went on to state that his company gave a discount to the residents in Dearborn Heights.

Protect Yourself From Predatory Towing Companies
When Hamodi called the towing company to come and pick up the car for him, his son and he even moved it down the street so that it would be sitting in only a few inches of water instead of about a foot of water. Since it was already so late at night when the tow truck arrived, the driver said he would be taking it to the lot, which was fine with Hamodi. The problem is that he was not told there would be additional fees for the car to sit in the lot over night. He was just told the car was being taken to the lot, not that it was being taken to an impound lot.

When the police chief questioned the owner of the towing company about this problem, the owner stated that every car that is moved from flooded roads has to be moved using a loader and is charged anywhere from $225 to $250. He then stated that there is a $125 fee for the vehicle to be put in the impound yard. He even stated that any vehicle that was towed without the owner even being present was instantly taken to the impound yard. The owner also stated that his company advised every car owner before their car was towed what fees would be placed for the services.

According to Hamodi, he was never told of the of the additional fees. All he knows is that when he went to pick up the car the very next morning, he was told he owed $545. He filed a complaint, and in response, the tow company lowered the cost that he owed to $465. This was still too much for Hamodi though. He was already struggling with the costs of living until his insurance kicked in and fixed everything that was damaged by the flood. Hamodi stated that the main problem was the fact that it was taken to an impound lot, which he believed it should not have been since he was not pulled over or given a ticket.

Hamodi has made it very clear that he will never be using the J&M Towing company again. He states that it is not right how they were taking advantage of people that were dealing with a disaster level situation.

In response, the owner of the towing company stated that he understands the people are in a bind but that he still has bills and other expenses that he has to pay. His trucks that he uses for towing costs about $125,000 for each truck, and he states that the amount of water that the trucks were stuck driving through during the flood were doing damage to the truck every single time the truck drove through them. Even though driving through the water was harming each of the trucks every single time, he stated he still had to do it because the roads needed to be cleared for the emergency vehicles. He said the normal maintenance on each truck could range from $3,000 to $5,000 and could be higher due to damage from the water.

Tow Trucks In Wyandotte
When the Mayor, Daniel Paletko, was asked about this whole situation, he stated that his office was getting major complaints about several different towing companies that were towing cars even without the car owners permission and stating that they were the city towing company. He states that the city does not have a towing company that they use, so any company that was proclaiming that was wrong. He states that these companies should not have been taking money from the people of his city in the way they were, especially the ones doing it without the car owners consent.

Downriver Reliable Towing
While this shows how one of the tow trucks near me is getting a bunch of complaints for the fee that had to be applied, there are other towing companies that were willing to work with people in these kinds of situations to make it much more affordable. Downriver Reliable Towing of Wyandotte, MI is a company that offers 24 hour towing service and are a prime example of this kind of company. They have a set fee that has to be paid upfront in order to recover a car in this kind of situation, and then the customers have the chance to work with them to pay off any additional fees that they may owe.
