A Major Mexican Mayan Culture Seated Deity Sells for Record at Drouot in Paris
At 156 cm high, this sculpture in polychrome stucco stone is a unique example of sculpture from the Mayan civilization.

PARIS.- On Monday, March 21, 2011 at Drouot Richelieu, the auction house sold a very important collection of Pre-Columbian art. The items belonged to the collection of Mr. H. Law, who has been collecting for 25 years beautiful "stone figures" from the State of Guerrero in Mexico. Yesterday, he separated from this impressive set for personal reasons. In fact, his taste was moving toward contemporary art and "it becomes difficult," he said "to do both, I stopped collecting pre-Columbian art ten years ago."

The collection totaled € 7,452,914 including fees. The highest bid was for Lot No. 107, a major Mexican Mayan Culture seated deity, from the region of the Rio Bec? or Chen, which sold for € 2,912,000 including fees. The polychrome stucco figure is dated from the Classical Period, 550-950 AD.

"At 156 cm high, this sculpture in polychrome stucco stone is a unique example of sculpture from the Mayan civilization. It is the largest foot statue that is known among the Maya. The work represents a seated figure. It was to occupy a throne that has disappeared. The torso tall and straight supports a head wearing a flat hat which forms a sort of blue turban. The face is hidden behind a mask with features terrifying. The eyes have large orbits in recess.
