NEW YORK, NY.- Photos of some of America’s greatest sporting stars, captured by the former leading sports magazine, will be on show at Artexpo New York from February 28 to March 3 at the Javits Convention Center.

Anchored by the SPORT Magazine Photographic Archive, The SPORT Collection consists of almost a quarter million images – color transparencies, black and white negatives, vintage photographic prints and news photographs – covering the world of sports from the 1920s to the 1990s. Due to the particular focus on superstars, the archive includes significant files on many Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers across all the major sports, including: Baseball greats Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax and Frank Robinson; Football champions Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Jim Brown and Paul Hornung; Basketball legends Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson and Bob Cousy; Hockey icons Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe; Boxing behemoths Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Patterson, George Foreman and Rocky Marciano; and Golfing greats Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Ben Hogan.

From its first issue in September 1946, SPORT magazine – which preceded the debut of Sports Illustrated by eight years – was an instant hit, rising to well over one million in circulation and featuring the work of the greatest writers and photographers of the era. In particular, SPORT's ground-breaking use of photography captivated a generation of sports fans, many of whom wallpapered their bedrooms with the full-page photos that were the magazine’s signature item.

When SPORT magazine closed its doors in the summer of 2000, Allen Barra of the Wall Street Journal called it the greatest of all American sports magazines. Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe described SPORT as “an irreplaceable part of the American sports experience.”

The SPORT Collection is just one of the special exhibits on show during the 30th Annual Artexpo New York. Since debuting in 1978, Artexpo New York has helped launch the careers of some of the finest American artists of the 20th century, including Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Robert Indiana, Leroy Neiman and Robert rauschenberg.

More than 50,000 visitors, including trade buyers and consumer art enthusiasts, are expected to attend the 30th anniversary event, where they can purchase both traditional and cutting-edge works ranging from original paintings and sculptures to limited-edition lithographs, giclees, animation art, photography and more. The 2008 show will also have an expanded selection of international art available, showcasing the latest trends in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Tickets for Artexpo New York are available the day of the show at the Javits Convention Center box office or at The show is open on February 28 and 29 from 10am to 6pm to trade only, and then to the public on March 1 from 10am-6pm, March 2 from 11am-6pm, and March 3 from 10am-2pm.
