Voice of the Unseen: Chinese independent art 1979-today on view in Venice
This exhibition is a spiritual child of curator Wang Lin, for over three decades one of the most influential critic leaders in China. Wang Lin has asked the opinion of a group of 12 well-known cristics and art experts, to guarantee a 360° vision on the contemporary art scene in the Asian nation.
VENICE.- Where are and what are doing today the artists who, with the event of the Xidan Democracy Wall in Beijing in 1979, gave birth to the movement of independent art in China?

This exhibition is the most ambitious attempt so far to draw light into the history of Chinese art in the last three decades, rewritten through the work of 188 between artists and groups that have animated, from the Post-Avant-Garde of '80s-'90s to our day, the uno cial art movement in China.

For its character, extent, and location, on 4500 square meters inside the Arsenale, Voice of the Unseen is an epoch-making event: the largest show of independent Chinese art organized so far in the Western world, with a 50% of artists who had never been shown before outside the national borders.

According to Wang Lin, the Western world still has a partial and somewhat warped view of Chinese art, influenced both by the choices of Western and Chinese curators and art dealers, and by the vision promoted by the Chinese o cialdom.

But in this historical moment, says Wang Lin, never as before China wants to talk, wants its real, original, spontaneous voice to be heard. China wants to create a bridge of human, cultural and artistic content towards the other nations of the world.

A passage through an event of worldwide cultural significance as the Biennale can be highly relevant to support the new Chinese art in the deep transformation that the Asian nation is experiencing in this moment.

In line with the theme proposed by the Artistic Director of the 55th International Art Exhibition, Voice of the Unseen transforms the Tese di San Cristoforo No. 92, 93, 94, and the magnificent Nappa No. 91 (a space never used before for an art event) of the Venice Arsenal into a vast encyclopedia of contemporary Chinese life and culture, divided into 9 sections:

Family - Village - Ruins - Poverty - Body - Landscape - Memory - History - Magic

narrated through painting, sculpture, installation, video, performing arts and documentary materials.
