SAN FRANCISCO, CA.-
Back in 2005 after a severe family accident: Painter, Carlos Loarca, and his son, Tomas Loarca, spent time together everyday driving back and forth across the San Francisco Bay Bridge to a hospital in Vallejo. During that time a son got to know his father which changed everything he thought he knew about his father and his art. His resentful misunderstanding of painting turned into an appreciation that transmuted itself, eight years later, into Tomas Loarca and Ariel Martinezs book, A Possible Reality Carlos Loarca Artist and Muralist.
A Possible Reality highlights a sample of fifty recent paintings from maestro painter/muralist Carlos Loarca. Loarcas career spans over fifty years with shows in the United States, London, and Italy with murals in San Francisco, Guatemala, and St. Petersburg, Russia.
Loarcas muse, El Cadejo, a legendary dog from his hometown of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala is a protector of drunks as they wander home from the cantina. Loarca and his family battled alcoholism and experienced the protecting power of El Cadejo. His belief in the legend as a child stayed with him and eventually helped him overcome his addiction. The image of the dog first appeared in his art in the mid nineteen seventies and has since remained, growing old with him.
The paintings demonstrate bright vibrant colors traditionally associated with the Maya Indian use of color, inspired by nature, consisting of rich blues, bright yellows, and vibrant reds. These poignant colors dance across the canvas and connect the creator and the spectator.
Loarca states, The image in the painting makes sense to everyone, but always in a different way, depending on the cultural background and intense depth of belief.
Loarcas use of lines protrudes through every piece like a continuum of thought and creation. The paintings were specifically selected to demonstrate Loarcas range of human emotions that are not conveyed in spoken language, but rather visibly displayed on a medium as a form of higher communication.
A Possible Realty Carlos Loarca Artist and Muralist is the first book developed by the Loarca-Martinez duo, who hopes to re-popularize the arts with the upcoming generation. Their works includes a foster youth mural and other philanthropic community work.
