Puerto Rican team wins Haitian cathedral contest

MIAMI (AP).- A Puerto Rican architect has won a competition seeking ideas for rebuilding a Haitian cathedral toppled by an earthquake.

More than 130 designs for a new Notre Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral were considered by a jury led by the dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture. A team led by Segundo Cardona of SCF Architectos in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was named the winner Thursday.

The cathedral collapsed in the Jan. 12, 2010, quake that destroyed much of Haiti's capital.

Cardona's design links the ruins of the cathedral's facade and rose window with a new rotunda built around a central altar. Jury member Patrick Delatour — an architect and former Haitian government minister — said Cardona's design respectfully incorporated the cathedral's past and the city's ongoing recovery.
