LOS ANGELES, CA.- As a participating gallery of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of The Getty, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) presents Collecting in Los Angeles 1945-1980, a three week exhibit that explores an ideal Pacific Standard Time collector of art, Mr. Richard Dorso, at the height of his collecting from 1945 – 1980. The three week exhibit will conclude with an auction of Mr. Dorso’s entire collection on October 9, 2011.

Born in San Francisco in 1909, Richard Dorso, an active participant and witness to the explosion of the post World War II Los Angeles art scene, compiled a unique collection of art of the period. His collection is comprised of over 400 works from Los Angeles art galleries, publishers, and artists’ studios, all linked through the discerning eye of one collector.

Highlight works include two John Baldessari paintings from 1967 - 1968, purchased from the landmark Molly Barnes gallery show, a Robert Cottingham photorealist painting from the late 1960s, and numerous paintings by Bay Area artists such as Paul Wonner and Nathan Oliveira. Also included will be hundreds of works purchased from local Los Angeles galleries such as Felix Landau, Molly Barnes, Ferus, Edgardo Acosta, Ankrum, Esther Robles, and Rosamund Felsen, as well as works published by Gemini G.E.L., Crown Point Press, Tamarind, among others.

Mr. Richard Dorso passed away this year at the age of 102.

Peter Loughrey, Director: “Through Mr. Dorso’s collection we get a special glimpse at the passion and power of the post World War II art movement in Los Angeles. His collection is a time capsule that enables us to experience this time period through one collector’s eye.”

LAMA is producing a special one-owner catalogue featuring photographs of the collection in-situ by Grant Mudford and a special introduction by Norman Lear.

LAMA, Los Angeles’ premier Modern Art auction house, is dedicated to selling vintage 20th Century Modern Art, Design and Furniture. Auctions are held at the LAMA showroom.
