ArtPrize Founder Rick DeVos Announces Plans for the Third Edition of ArtPrize

GRAND RAPIDS, MI.- ArtPrize founder Rick DeVos today announced plans for the third edition of ArtPrize. ArtPrize 2011 will open on Sept. 21 and run through Oct. 9. Artist and venue information as well as dates for Top 10 and the winners’ announcement will be announced after the beginning of the year. ArtPrize will continue to award the top 10 prizes totaling $449,000 and expects the number of individual juried prizes to increase.

“The engagement of the community continues to be at the forefront of ArtPrize’s success,” said DeVos. “It is amazing to learn of school programs that are being developed and the local outreach aimed at inviting artists to our city from all over the world. Venues are beginning to plan unique programming to promote their artists and establishments. It’s all about creating, trying new things, not being afraid to fail and, ultimately, succeeding together.”

ArtPrize 2010 introduced the concept of exhibition centers within the three-mile ArtPrize district to help visitors more strategically navigate through all the neighborhoods. “The exhibition centers were great starting points for visitors,” said Bill Holsinger-Robinson, ArtPrize executive director. “The centers offered a place where people could come up with a plan to walk, tour by bus or meet friends while visiting.”

The number of registered voters increased by nearly 10,000 in 2010; 44,912 people voted either by text message or on the web. The number of votes increased by about 135,000 over 2009, bringing the total number of votes cast to 465,538 in two rounds of voting. (During the first round voters can vote for more than one artist.)

A key element to the success of ArtPrize continues to be the volunteers. This year, 980 people donated their time to be part of the ArtPrize experience. Volunteers worked 2,587 shifts for a total of 11,258 hours. Volunteers guided visitors to the 1,713 pieces of art on display at 192 different locations and many individuals also gave their time to work in the ArtPrize gift shop or help at many of the events.

ArtPrize is currently working to secure sponsors for 2011. ArtPrize 2010 had more than 140 businesses, individuals and foundations sponsor many aspects of the 19-day event. Attached is a complete list of those who sponsored ArtPrize in 2010. ArtPrize submitted its 501(c)3 application with the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year. The application is being reviewed by an IRS staff member.

Expenses associated with the 2010 event were approximately $2.8 million. The difference between revenues and expenses, as well as capital expenditures for ArtPrize infrastructure has been funded by loan from the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. In addition, the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation provided the 2010 top 10 prize money ($449.000). In addition, a variety of sponsors provided money for the juried awards. The plan is to have ArtPrize become self sustaining (through sponsorships and other revenue sources) over the next couple of years.
