LONDON.- The Royal Institute of British Architects announced that the Marco Goldschmied Foundation will be generously donating the £20,000 cash prize for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2009, in association with The Architects' Journal and Crystal CG .

Set up by former RIBA President Marco Goldschmied, the Foundation supports the Stephen Lawrence Prize, which encourages fresh talent working with a budget of under £1 million, and has in addition extended its support this year to become the Stirling Prize Fund donor. It will, at the same time, contribute matching support of £20,000 to the Amnesty Arts Fund.

The RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded to the architects of the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year; this year's shortlist features a pioneering health centre in London, an imposing winery in Spain, an elegant museum in Denmark, and a mixed-use scheme contributing to the regeneration of Liverpool.

This year, the RIBA is also pleased to welcome NBS (the National Building Specification) as an Associate Sponsor, who will join Autodesk, Ibstock, and SIV Human Resources as Associate Sponsors of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2009.

Sunand Prasad , RIBA Immediate Past President said: "The RIBA Stirling Prize is the UK's foremost architecture prize. No other architecture prize is so rigorously judged, hotly debated or broadcast on national television. We would like to extend our warmest gratitude to Marco Goldschmeid for his continued commitment to architecture, and the generous additional support he has provided this year to the Stirling Prize; the combination of winning both the kudos and prize fund have been of huge value to previous winners. I look forward to the ceremony in October; this year's shorlist boasts a fascinating set of schemes, and the judges have a hard but eagerly anticipated decision to make."

Speaking yesterday, Marco Goldschmied said: "Architecture needs to lead in the field of the arts, as well as in the environment and society. I am therefore delighted to sustain the Stirling Prize as a leading award alongside the Booker and Turner prizes for literature and art. At the same time I am making a matching contribution to the Amnesty Arts Fund, as I passionately believe that as a profession we should do what we can to remove oppression and injustice in the world."

The winner of the RIBA Stirling Prizein association with The Architects' Journal and Crystal CG will be announced at Old Billingsgate, London on Saturday 17 October 2009, and broadcast live on Channel 4.

Previous winners include 30 St. Mary Axe by Foster + Partners, the Laban Centre by Herzog & de Meuron, Gateshead Millennium Bridge by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Barajas Airport by the Richard Rogers Partnership, Museum of Modern Literature by David Chipperfield Architects, and Accordia by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Alison Brooks Architects, and Macreanor Lavington.
